【브레이크뉴스 경북】이성현 기자=국민의힘 이철우 경북도지사 후보가 28일 오전 영남대학교 일원에서 학생들을 만났다. 이 후보는 교육부 폐지론과 대학과 우리 교육방식의 혁신에 가까운 변화르 이날도 주문했다.

행사가 떠들썩하지도 않았다. 이날 행사장 일원에서는 영남대가 주관하는 가족단위 스포츠 행사가 열렸지만, 교내 누구도 도지사 후보가 학생들을 만난다는 사실을 알지 못했다. 장소도 학생들과 서슴없이 이야기하고 눈빛을 교환할 수 있는 잔디 광장 옆 작은 숲속에서 열렸다.

우리 교육 “방식의 대전환 필요.. 놀다 지쳐서 하는 게 공부라야”

교육자 출신인 이 후보는 이날도 우리나라 교육 정책과 시스템에 대하여 많은 시간을 토로했다. 실컷 놀다 지쳤을 때 하는 게 공부라야 한다는 점을 강조할 때는 어릴 때부터 치열한 경쟁 속에 노출되어있는 청년들의 현실을 안타까워하면서도 우리 교육 정책의 대전환이 필요하다고 강조했다.

특히, 폐교되거나 그럴 위험이 있는 대학의 현실을 지적하는 학생의 질문에 대해서는 “우리 나라 대학이 몸집만 키워서는 안된다. 여기 영남대 학생이 2만 여 명으로 알고 있는데 1천200명대 정도로 대폭 줄어야 한다. 대신 특성화된 대학으로 가야 한다. 대학도 이제 지방정부에서 함께 운영하는 방식으로 전환되고 있다. 그래야 학생들의 진로와 미래를 함께 고민할 수 있고 대안을 만들어나갈 수 있다.”고 강조했다. 

그러면서 “국립대와 사립대의 역할과 기능도 확실히 나누어져야 한다. 사립대는 철저하게 취직 위주의 교육에 전념해야 한다. 국립대는 사립대가 하지 못하는 학문적 연구 등을 담당하는 역할을 해야 한다. 지금은 우리나라 대학 모두 다 똑같지 않나. 이래서는 청년들의 고민을 해결할 수 없고 우리 미래를 준비하는 인재로 키워낼 수없다. 그만큼 우리 미래를 보장할 수 없다.”고 덧붙였다.

웃음으로 화답하는 이철우 후보

교육 방식에 대하여도 그는 외국 선진 교육과 우리 교육의 현실을 비교하며 “놀면서 공부하는 시스템, 그러다 지쳐 공부에 전념하는 방식으로 우리도 변해야 하지 않을까? 학교는 놀러 가는 곳이어야 한다. 그래야 학교에 가고 싶어진다. 또, 다양한 경험을 할 수 있는 곳으로 만들어야 한다. 우리는 공부라는 너무 치열한 세계 속에서 살고 있다.”면서 “외국 학생들은 여러분 나이에 창업을 한다. 놀면서 다양한 경험을 하고, 창업도 하고, 그러다 보면 창업 성공률도 높아진다. 우리는 5%라는 초라한 성공률을 가지고 있지만 선진 학생들은 70%가 넘는 창업 성공률을 자랑하고 있다. 그러다 실패하면 다시 일어나도록 국가와 지방정부가 지원하면 된다. 여러분 전공이 무엇이던지, 그 전공과 관련한 기업들이 대학에서 여러분과 함께 공부하고 같이 커나가는 시스템으로의 변환이 하루빨리 이뤄져야 한다”고 강조했다. 

이 후보는 “그런 차원에서 지금의 교육부를 폐지해야 한다고 나는 주장한다. 윤석열 대통령에게도 놀면서 공부하는 교육, 조기 창업에 대한 필요성, 천편일률적인 교육 방식의 개선을 강력하게 건의했다”면서 “도청에 있을 때도 직원들에게 나는 놀면서 일하라고 한다. 나도 놀면서 일한다. 선거운동도 놀면서 하고 있다. 나는 평상시에 선거운동 한다.”며 거듭 노는 문화에 대한 중요성을 강조했다. 

각종 행정 프로그램에 청년들이 참여할 수있도록 해달라는 건의에 이 후보는 “ 많은 청년 정책을 경북도에서도 실시하는데, 문제는 활용을 잘 하지 않더라”며 안타까움을 나타냈다. 그는 “나는 청년들에게 농업에 과감하게 도전하라고 주문하고 싶다. 우리는 ‘스마트 팜‘이라고 하지만 네덜란드는 ’스마트컴퍼니‘라고 한다. 농업회사에 취직하는 시스템이다. 우리도 상주에 설립해 놓았다. 이런 정책들에 도전해 보길 권한다”고 말했다. 

이날 이철우 후보와 학생들의 만남은 당초 35분간의 시간을 넘어 약 1시간 가량 이뤄졌다. 이철우 후보는 행사 말미에도 도청 생활과 도정 운영에 대한 방식을 학생들과 공유했다. 특히 이 후보는 창업과 교육 방식, 국가 및 지자체의 역할과 존재 이유를 설명하며 “내 주변의 인물이 나에게 얼마나 영향을 미치는지에 대하여 학생들이 관심 갖기를 바란다“며 ”관심을 가져야 사회가 변하고 내가 변한다“고 강조했다.
