【브레이크뉴스 경북 】이성현 기자= 지난 6일 경북 김천에서는 선거 역사상 참으로 해괴한 재판이 있었다. 대구지방법원 김천지원 형사1부(재판장 최연미)에서는 공직선거법 위반 혐의로 구속기소된 김충섭 김천시장에 대한 1심 재판이 있었다. 앞서 김 시장은 지난 2022년도 지방선거를 앞두고 명절 선물을 돌린 혐의로 재판에 넘겨졌다.

재판부는 이날 김충섭 시장에게 징역 2년에 집행유예 3년을 선고하고, 함께 기소된 김천시 정무비서 A 씨에 대해서는 징역 1년 6월 집행유예 2년을 선고했다. 김 시장은 이날 선고로 일단은 구속상태를 피하고 시장 업무에 복귀했다. 

그러나 정작 이날 시민들이 재판을 주목한 이유는 따로 있었다. 김 시장이 돌린 것으로 알려진 선물 공세에 관련된 공무원들만 23명. 이들에 대한 선고와 일반 시민들에 대한 과태료 부과 문제가 관심 이었다.

김충섭 시장은 지난 2022년 전국동시지방선거를 앞두고 공무원들을 조직적으로 동원해 지역 유지와 언론인, 경찰공무원 등 선거구민 1800여 명에게 6600여만원 상당의 현물을 돌린 혐의로 재판대에 섰다. 또, 공무원들은 선거 전 지역 유지 수 백 명에게 공금을 사용해 과하주 등의 선물을 돌린 혐의로 기소됐다. 이들보다 앞서 김천시청 공무원 10명도 본 사건과 관련해 징역형 집유와 벌금형을 선고받은 바 있다. 

업무에 복귀는 했지만, 김 시장이 자유로워진 것은 아니다. 벌금 100만원만 확정 되더라도 김 시장은 시장직을 잃는다. 

흉흉해진 민심, 정치권으로 옮겨붙어 

김천시는 이번 사건으로 아수라장이 됐다. 2월 초, 거리에서 만난 김천 시민들 대부분은 하루 앞으로 다가온 재판을 예측하면서 깊은 한숨을 내쉬었다. 그도 그럴것이 김 시장의 선거법 위반으로 많은 시민과 공무원들이 범법자가 되거나 수 십 배의 과태료를 부담해야 할 처지다. 

지금 김천은 받은 이들에 대한 비판보다는 일을 이 지경까지 만든 김 시장에 비난이 더 거세다. 그리고, 김 시장이 업무에 복귀한다는 소식이 전해지자 김천시엔 확인되지 않은 흉흉한 소문이 돌고 있다.
