【브레이크뉴스 김천】진예솔 기자=국민의힘 송언석 의원(경북 김천)이 국보 제99호 ‘갈항사지 동·서 삼층석탑’의 김천 반환을 위한 시민 서명운동을 개시했다.

갈항사지 동·서 삼층석탑은 통일신라 시대 경덕왕 17년에 만들어진 석조유물로써, 지난 1962년 국보 제99호로 지정되었다.

두 석탑은 본래 갈항사 터가 있던 김천시 남면 오봉리 일원에 있었으나, 일제 강점기였던 1916년, 일본에 반출될 위기에 처하자 서울 경복궁으로 옮겨졌다.

이후 2005년 서울 용산에 위치한 국립중앙박물관으로 옮겨져 현재까지 이어지고 있다.

이에 송언석 의원은 “갈항사지 동·서 삼층석탑은 통일신라시대 불교의 한 축을 담당했던 김천의 불교 전통문화를 여실히 보여주는 증거이자, 김천의 귀중한 문화유산이다”며 “두 석탑이 본래 자리인 김천으로 돌아오기를 바라는 시민들의 염원을 담아 서명운동을 진행한다”고 전했다.

그는 “문화재청, 국립중앙박물관 등 관계 기관과의 긴밀한 소통을 통해 갈항사지 동·서 삼층석탑이 조속히 김천으로 반환될 수 있도록 온 힘을 다하겠다”고 덧붙였다.

People Power Party lawmaker Song Eon-seok (Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk) has launched a citizen signature campaign to return National Treasure No. 99, the East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas of Galhangsa Temple Site, to Gimcheon.

The East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas of Galhangsa Temple Site are stone artifacts built in the 17th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign during the Unified Silla period, and were designated National Treasure No. 99 in 1962.

The two stone pagodas were originally located in Obong-ri, Nam-myeon, Gimcheon-si, where the site of Galhangsa Temple was located, but were moved to Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul in 1916 during the Japanese colonial period when they were in danger of being taken to Japan.

They were later moved to the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul in 2005, where they remain to this day.

In response, Rep. Song Eon-seok said, “The East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas of Galhangsa Temple Site are evidence that clearly show the Buddhist traditional culture of Gimcheon, which played a pivotal role in Buddhism during the Unified Silla period, and are Gimcheon’s precious cultural heritage,” and added, “We are conducting a signature campaign to convey the wishes of citizens who hope that the two stone pagodas will be returned to their original location in Gimcheon.” He added, “We will do our best to ensure that the East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas of Galhangsa Temple Site are returned to Gimcheon as soon as possible through close communication with related organizations such as the Cultural Heritage Administration and the National Museum of Korea.”
