안동시는 현재 기본·실시설계 용역을 진행하며, 사업 대상지인 길안천과 주변 습지 등 우수한 자연생태를 최대한 보존하는 동시에 안동의 역사·문화 정체성을 반영한 지역형 정원 조성을 구상하고 있다.

금소지방정원은 약 35만㎡ 규모로 조성되며, 5개의 주제 정원과 3개의 테마길을 구성해 사계절 내내 다양한 경관과 체험을 즐길 수 있는 생태·문화 공간으로 조성될 계획이다. 시는 향후 예산을 추가 확보해 보행교, 진입도로, 주차장, 정원지원센터 등 기반시설도 확충한다. 안정적 운영 후에는 국가정원 승격을 목표로 하고 있다.

안동시 관계자는 “금소지방정원을 안동 고유의 생태와 문화를 담은 정원문화 공간으로 조성해 시민의 휴식공간이자 지역관광의 새로운 거점으로 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 말했다.
