이번 수사는 국민권익위원회가 지난 3년간 지방의회 국외 출장 실태를 점검한 결과, 항공권 가격을 부풀리거나 경비를 부정 지출한 사례 수백 건을 적발해 경찰에 수사를 의뢰한 데 따른 것이다.

권익위는 2022년 1월부터 2024년 5월까지 전국 지방의원 국외 출장 915건을 전수 조사한 결과, 항공권 위·변조 405건, 경비 부정 집행 178건, 직원 부담금 대납 117건 등을 적발했다.

경찰은 이번 압수수색을 통해 각 의회 사무국 등에서 지난 3년간 집행된 국외 출장비 내역을 확인하고, 실제보다 과다하게 집행된 사례가 있었는지 집중적으로 조사할 방침이다.

한 경찰 관계자는 "권익위원회로부터 수사 의뢰를 받아 압수수색을 진행 중이며, 현재 수사 중인 사안에 대해서는 구체적인 내용을 밝히기 어렵다"고 밝혔다.
