경북경찰청은 도내 전 경찰서에서 주간 음주단속을 강화한 음주운전 집중 단속을 시행하고 있다고 14일 밝혔다.

음주단속은 코로나19 사회적 거리두기 완화 조치와 기온 상승에 따른 야외 활동이 늘어날 것으로 예상됨에 따라 지난달 8일부터 추진 중이다. 

경찰은 주간 취약시간대·야간·심야시간대 불문, 주요 국·지방도상에서 교통·지역경찰 등 전 경찰력 3천 833명, 순찰차 1천 787대, 싸이카 92대를 총 집중해 음주운전자 304명을 단속했다.

그 결과 전년 동기간 대비 음주교통사고 사망자 50%, 사고 46%가 감소하는 성과를 냈다.

경북경찰청은 음주운전 근절 문화가 정착될 때까지 도경찰청에서 운용하고 있는 암행순찰차를 현장에 지원하고, 경찰서 단위에서는 30분 단위로 단속 장소를 변경하여 예측 불가능한 스폿이동식 단속을 지속적으로 실시 할 예정이다.

또한 운전자의 교통법규 준수 의식 확립을 위해 신호위반, 중앙선침범, 안전띠·안전모미착용 등 교통법규 위반행위도 병행하여 단속한다.

경찰 관계자는 "음주운전은 타인의 생명을 앗아가는 엄중한 중대 범죄로 '경북 지역 내 음주 단속은 시와 때와 장소가 따로 없다’라는 인식이 정착될 때까지 상시 단속하고, 도민들의 적극적인 동참으로 음주운전 차량으로 의심되는 경우 반드시 신고해 줄 것"을 당부했다.
