이번 집중단속은 음주운전 교통사고가 집중되는 매주 금요일 야간 전국 일제 단속을 실시한다.

휴가철 특성을 고려하여 피서지 주변이나 유흥가·식당가, 고속도로 진·출입로 등 음주운전 사고 다발지역을 지역 실정에 맞게 선정, 주·야 불문 단속할 계획이다.

경북의 경우 최근 3년간 음주운전 교통사고 발생 건수는 줄어들고 있다.

지난 2019년 1087건에서 2020년 1078건으로 소폭 감소했고 2021년에는 912건으로 15.4%의 감소율을 보였다. 올해 상반기 음주운전 교통사고 발생 건수도 373건으로 지난해 상반기보다 15.6% 줄었다.

그러나 음주 사고로 인한 사망자는 2019년 25명에서 2020년 20명으로 줄어들다가 2021년 23명으로 다시 늘었다. 올해 상반기 사망자는 지난해보다 1명 증가한 12명으로 나타났다.

경상북도경찰청 관계자는 "사회적 거리두기 해제에 따라 다중이용시설 영업시간 제한이 없어지면서 모임, 술자리가 많아진 영향으로 보인다"며 "음주운전은 타인의 생명을 앗아가는 엄중한 중대 범죄로 휴가철 들뜬 분위기에 휩쓸려 음주운전을 해서는 절대 안 된다"고 당부했다.
