지난 8일 경북경찰청은 채 상병 사망사고 수사결과 임성근 전 해병대 1사단장을 비롯한 3명 불송치, 해병대 1사단 7여단장 등 6명을 송치했다고 밝혔다.

이에 민주당 경북도당은 9일 “경북경찰청이 규정에 맞지 않게 수사심의위원회를 꾸리고 혐의자 9명 가운데 임 전 사단장의 업무상과실치사 혐의에 대해 불송치 결정을 내린 수심위 의견을 고스란히 받아들인 것에 지나지 않다”며 특검법 수용을 촉구하는 논평을 발표했다.

이들은 “국방부 조사본부는 박정훈 전 해병대 수사단장이 임성근 전 해병대 1사단장 등 8명에 대해 업무상과실치사 혐의를 명시해 경북경찰청으로 이첩한 수사기록을 회수해 임 사단장 등 6명을 혐의자에서 제외하고 경북경찰청에 재이첩했다”고 주장했다.

그러면서 “이 과정에서 이종섭 전 국방부 장관은 해병대 부사령관에 10가지 사항을 지시했고 김계환 해병대사령관이 박정훈 단장에게 ‘VIP가 격노했다’는 사실을 전한 것이 알려졌다”고 말했다.

더불어민주당 경북도당은 “이번 수사결과 발표가 윤석열 대통령을 비롯한 대통령실 관계자들에 대한 수사에 한계를 드러낸 것”이라며 “특별검사를 즉각 실시할 것을 강력히 촉구하며 만일 윤석열 대통령이 또다시 ‘채상병 특검법’을 거부한다면 국민적 분노를 감당해야 할 것”이라고 강조했다.
