【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=한국뇌연구원 뇌분야 응용·융합 연구를 수행할 우뇌연구동이 준공됐다.  

한국뇌연구원은 14일, 지난 2019년 대구시가 280억 원을 투자한 연면적 11,055m2(지상4층, 지하1층) 규모의 한국뇌연구원 준공을 13일 개최했다고 밝혔다.

연구원에 따르면 이날 준공식에는 이종화 대구시 경제부시장, 이태손 대구시 경제환경위원회 위원장, 강대식 국회의원, 홍석준 국회의원, 노정혜 대구경북과학기술원(DGIST) 이사장, 국 양 DGIST 총장 등이 참석한 가운데 건립경과 보고 및 발전전략 발표에 이어 건립공사 및 뇌연구 발전 유공자를 위한 감사패 및 공로패 수여식이 진행되었다.

뇌연구원 우뇌연구동은 자유롭게 소형 및 대형 연구 실험이 가능한 오픈랩 형식의 실험실(Wet-lab)이 2,610.69m2 규모이며, 첨단장비센터는 총 436.65m2 규모로 주요현미경실, FACS실, TEM실, EEG 실험실 및 주요기기 개발실로 구성되어있다. 

이 외에도 전기생리학실, 인간행동실험실, 데이터분석실 및 초파리유전학실험실 등이 배치되어 4차산업혁명 대비 첨단 뇌연구 성장을 가속화 할 예정으로 아울러 차세대 뇌연구 홍보관을 구축할 예정이다.

한국뇌연구원은 2011년 12월 이후 3단계로 나눠 건립됐다. 현재 사용 중인 1단계(좌뇌연구동) 건립은 2014년 준공되어 기초·원천 기반 뇌연구에 주력했으며, 2단계(우뇌연구동) 건립으로 기존 기초 연구를 인간 대상 연구로 확장하고, 뇌인지·뇌공학 등 융합 연구를 수행해 인간 중심 미래 뇌연구 허브 기점을 마련할 전망이다. 특히, 1단계 및 2단계 연구동은 모두 대구시가 투자해 건립되었다.

또한, 연구원은 정부 지원으로 뇌연구분야 실용화·산업화 기반 마련을 위한 3단계(뇌연구실용화센터)를 총 사업비 239억원, 건축 연면적 5,715m2 규모로 2023년 완공할 예정으로, AI와 빅데이터를 활용해 뇌연구 플랫폼을 구축할 수 있는 환경을 조성한다. 또한, 연구자 정주여건 개선을 위한 기숙사를 2025년 완공하여, “글로벌 뇌연구 선도기관”도약의 발판을 마련한다. 

한국뇌연구원 서판길 원장은 “2023년까지 3단계 뇌연구실용화센터 건설사업을 차질 없이 진행할 것”이라고 밝혔으며, “한국뇌연구원은 국책연구기관으로 글로벌 뇌연구역량 강화뿐만 아니라 사회적 책무를 달성할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

The Korea Brain Research Institute was established in three stages after December 2011. The first phase (Left Brain Research Building), which is currently in use, was completed in 2014 and focused on basic/source-based brain research, and the second phase (Right Brain Research Building) expanded existing basic research to human subject research, brain cognition, brain engineering, etc. It is expected to establish a hub for human-centered future brain research by conducting convergence research. In particular, both the first and second phase research buildings were built with investment from Daegu City.

In addition, the Institute plans to complete the 3rd stage (Brain Research Practical Application Center) to lay the foundation for commercialization and industrialization in the field of brain research with government support by 2023 with a total project cost of KRW 23.9 billion and a building floor area of 5,715m2, utilizing AI and big data.
