【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=구미대학교(총장 정창주) 천무응원단이 한국 대학 치어리딩 대표로 세계 대회에 출전한다는 소식을 알렸다.

대학은 천무응원단이 오는 14일과 15일 미국 올랜도 ESPN(월트 디즈니사 계열의 스포츠 전문 채널) 경기장에서 열리는 ‘ICU 2023 UWCC’(유니버시티 월드컵 치어리딩 챔피언쉽)에 한국대표로 출전한다고 9일 밝혔다.

코치 2명과 선수 21명으로 구성된 천무응원단은 지난 7일 구미대 긍지관에서 출정식을 열고 경연에 앞서 결의를 다지는 시간을 가졌다.

해당 대회에 한국이 참가한 것은 이번이 처음으로 천무응원단은 ‘구미대학교(GUMI University)’라는 팀명으로 출전해 미국, 캐나다, 멕시코 등 세계 8개국에서 참가하는 31개 팀과 경연을 벌이게 될 예정이다.

국내 팀으로는 유일하게 스턴트 치어리딩을 구사하는 천무응원단은 2016년 창단 이후 ‘전국 대학 치어리딩 대회’에서 2018년, 2019년, 2022년 대상을 수상하며 국내 최고의 대학 치어리딩 팀으로 자리 잡았다.

 천무응원단 주장 신동환 학생(간호학과·4년)은 “세계 대회 첫 출전이라 긴장도 되지만 팀원 들 모두 실수 없이 대회를 즐길 수 있었으면 좋겠다.”고 출전 소감을 전했다.

 정창주 총장은 “우리 천무응원단이 한국을 대표해 세계 대회에 나간다는 것은 매우 자랑스러운 일이다”고 말하고 “한국 대표라는 당당한 긍지감으로 세계에 구미대학교의 이름을 알려주기 바란다”고 천무응원단을 격려했다.
