이번 결정이 단순한 공항 시설 유치 차원이 아니라 ‘의성의 미래 산업 구조를 완전히 재편할 분기점’이 될 가능성에 경북도와 의성군은 환영의 입장을 내놓았다.

3일 의성군은 예정된 대로 이달 중순 국토교통부 항공정책심의위원회에서 민간공항기본계획이 심의·확정되면, 연내 고시를 통해 화물기 전용터미널 계획이 공식 확정된다고 밝혔다.

김주수 군수는 “이번 반영은 특별법에 규정된 ‘여객·물류 중심 복합공항’으로 가기 위한 첫 성과”라면서 “무엇보다 지역 주민과의 약속인 ‘의성군 공동합의문’ 실현이 본격적으로 시작됐다는 점에서 매우 중요하다”고 의미를 부여했다. 특히 김 군수는 화물터미널의 역할 분담이 명확해진 점을 가장 큰 성과로 꼽았다. 정부 결정에 따라 의성군에는 화물기 전용 화물터미널이, 군위군에는 여객기 벨리카고 전용터미널이 들어설 예정이다.

김 군수는 “화물기 전용터미널은 단순히 항공시설 하나 더 생기는 문제가 아니다”라면서 “항공물류, MRO, 기업유치, 공항신도시 개발의 모든 출발점이며, 의성이 물류·항공정비 산업의 중심지가 될 기반이 열린 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

국민의힘 박형수 의원(의성·청송·영덕·울진)에 따르면 기획재정부는 지난 2일 ‘TK신공항 민간공항기본계획 총사업비 변경안’을 최종 확정했다. 총사업비는 기존 2조 3,835억 원에서 3,160억 원 늘어난 2조 6,995억 원으로 이 안에는 의성 화물터미널 부지 조성비 약 900억 원이 포함됐다.

박 의원은 “총사업비 확정으로 국토부는 기본계획 고시와 예산 집행을 빠르게 진행할 것”이라고 기대감을 나타냈다.

사업비 변경안의 확정으로 의성군이 신공항의 ‘실질적 산업 중심축’을 담당하게 될 전망이다.

의성군은 2021년부터 공항·물류·MRO·도시계획 전문가 그룹을 운영하며 신공항 연계 산업전략을 정밀히 준비해왔다. 올해 2월부터는 화물터미널 연계 항공물류단지 조성, 중소형 항공기 정비(MRO) 특화단지 구축, 항공 관련 기업 맞춤형 투자유치, 자유무역지역·경제자유구역 지정 추진, 공항신도시 조성 계획 등 실질적 실행전략을 추진 중이다.

김 군수는 “아직 해야 할 일이 많다”고 강조하면서도 “이번 기본계획 반영만으로도 의성은 완전히 새로운 성장의 길에 들어섰다. 모든 역량을 총동원해 신공항이 의성의 미래를 여는 새로운 축이 되도록 하겠다”고 말했다.

이를 위해 의성군은 앞으로 경북도와의 협력 체계를 강화해 항공물류·MRO·신산업 유치에 속도를 낼 계획이다. 이를 통해 공항 개항 전 산업단지 조성, 기업 유치, 관련 인프라 구축을 선제적으로 진행해 ‘의성형 항공산업 클러스터’를 확립하겠다는 목표를 제시했다.

Governor Kim added, "A dedicated cargo terminal is not simply a matter of adding another aviation facility. It is the starting point for all aspects of aviation logistics, MRO, corporate attraction, and the development of the new airport city. It lays the foundation for Uiseong to become a hub for the logistics and aircraft maintenance industries."

According to People Power Party Representative Park Hyung-soo (Uiseong, Cheongsong, Yeongdeok, Uljin), the Ministry of Economy and Finance finalized the "TK New Airport Civilian Airport Basic Plan Total Project Cost Amendment" on the 2nd. The total project cost increased by KRW 316 billion from the original KRW 2.3835 trillion to KRW 2.6995 trillion, including approximately KRW 90 billion for the Uiseong Cargo Terminal site development.

Representative Park expressed his expectations, saying, "With the finalization of the total project cost, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will expedite the announcement of the basic plan and budget execution."

With the finalization of the project cost amendment, Uiseong County is expected to assume the role of the "actual industrial hub" of the new airport.

Since 2021, Uiseong County has been meticulously preparing an industrial strategy linked to the new airport by operating a group of experts in airports, logistics, MRO, and urban planning. Since February of this year, the county has been pursuing practical implementation strategies, including the creation of an aviation logistics complex linked to a cargo terminal, a specialized small and medium-sized aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO) complex, attracting tailored investment from aviation-related companies, promoting the designation of free trade zones and free economic zones, and developing a new airport city.

While emphasizing that "there is still much work to be done," County Mayor Kim stated, "With this basic plan alone, Uiseong has entered a completely new path of growth. We will mobilize all our capabilities to ensure that the new airport becomes a new pillar of Uiseong's future."

To this end, Uiseong County plans to strengthen its cooperative relationship with North Gyeongsang Province and accelerate the attraction of aviation logistics, MRO, and new industries. Through these initiatives, the county aims to establish a "Uiseong-style aviation industry cluster" by proactively developing industrial complexes, attracting companies, and building related infrastructure before the airport's opening.
