더불어민주당 대구시당은 26일 추모 성명을 내고 “이해찬 전 총리는 민주주의가 가장 위태로웠던 시절, 침묵 대신 저항을, 안정보다 책임을 택한 정치인이었다”고 평가했다. 

이어 “독재에 맞선 민주화 운동의 현장에서부터 국가 운영의 중심까지, 늘 민주주의의 편에 서 있었다”고 회고했다.

시당은 고인의 정치 여정을 ‘민주주의를 지키고 제도로 완성한 시간’이라고 규정했다. 이해찬 전 총리가 국회의원, 국무총리, 여당 지도자를 지내면서 민주주의를 추상적 가치에 머물지 않고 실제 제도와 정책으로 구현했으며, 정부와 정당 안에 민주주의가 뿌리내리도록 했다는 점을 강조했다.

이와 함께 민주당과 진보 진영이 위기를 마주할 때마다 중심을 잡고, 책임을 감당한 리더십을 높이 평가했다. 

대구시당은 “이해찬이라는 이름은 민주당의 원칙이자 민주주의를 대하는 태도였다”면서 “말보다 실천으로 정치의 무게를 견뎌내며 책임을 다한 모습은 많은 이들에게 깊은 울림을 남겼다”고 밝혔다.

또한 “오늘 우리는 민주주의를 온몸으로 증명해 온 한 시대의 이정표와 작별한다”면서도 “그가 남긴 민주주의에 대한 신념과 국민주권에 대한 확신, 역사 앞에서의 책임의식은 여전히 살아 있다”고 강조했다.

민주당 대구시당은 “고인의 뜻을 이어받아 민주주의를 더욱 굳건히 지키고 국민의 삶에 책임지는 정치로 그 길을 이어가겠다”며 고인의 명복을 빌었다.

한편, 이해찬 전 총리는 민주화운동 세대 출신 정치인으로, 참여정부 시절 국무총리를 역임했으며 더불어민주당 대표로서 당을 이끌며 민주 진영의 중심 역할을 해왔다. 정치권 전반에서는 그의 별세를 계기로 민주주의 발전에 대한 공과를 되새기는 추모의 목소리가 이어지고 있다.
