이번 지정은 '고등교육법' 제50조의3 및 같은 법 시행령 제58조의5에 따른 ‘전문대학 4년제 물리치료사 양성학과 지정 기본계획’에 따라 이뤄졌다.

교육부의 학제 일원화 정책은 전문대학 물리치료학과의 교육 기간을 4년으로 통합해 전문 인력 양성 체계를 강화하기 위한 제도다. 대구보건대학교는 교육과정 고도화와 실습 인프라 구축, 교수진 역량 강화 등을 통해 4년제 수준의 교육 환경을 지속적으로 구축해 왔다.

대구보건대학교 물리치료학과는 3년제 과정임에도 전공 관련 수업 시간을 4년제 대학 평균보다 많은 177시간으로 편성해 운영하는 등 교육과정의 내실화를 추진해 왔다. 또한 졸업생이 학사학위를 취득할 수 있도록 1년 과정의 학사학위 전공심화과정(정원 80명)을 운영해 왔으며, 최근 ‘2024학년도 학사학위 전공심화과정 운영진단’에서 최고 등급인 S등급을 획득해 교육 운영의 우수성을 인정받았다.

실습 중심 교육 환경 구축에도 꾸준히 투자해 왔다. 로봇치료기와 첨단 평가 장비를 도입했으며, 2018년에는 전국 전문대학 최초로 수중치료실을 구축하는 등 임상 중심 교육 인프라를 강화했다. 또한 17명의 전임교수와 30여 명의 외래교수를 확보해 국가시험 대비 교육과 산학협력 네트워크 확대에도 힘써 왔다.

1977년 개설된 대구보건대학교 물리치료학과는 국내에서 가장 오랜 역사를 가진 물리치료 교육기관 가운데 하나로, 지금까지 약 8천여 명의 졸업생을 배출하며 국내 물리치료 교육의 중심 역할을 해왔다. 방대한 동문 네트워크는 학생들의 임상 실습과 취업 과정에서도 중요한 기반이 되고 있다.

남성희 총장은 “이번 4년제 지정은 대구보건대학교 물리치료학과가 오랜 기간 축적해 온 교육 역량과 임상 중심 교육 시스템이 정부로부터 공식적으로 인정받은 결과”라며 “앞으로도 체계적인 교육과 실습 환경을 바탕으로 지역사회와 보건의료 분야를 이끌어갈 우수한 물리치료 인재 양성에 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

한편 대구보건대학교 물리치료학과는 이번 지정에 따라 2027학년도부터 전문대학 4년제 학사과정을 운영할 예정이다.
