이날 행사는 산업계와 연구기관, 공공부문 전문가들이 한자리에 모여 구미형 AI 정책의 중·장기 로드맵과 핵심 전략과제를 논의하는 자리로 마련됐다.

구미시 AI 비전위원회는 전문성 강화와 정부 정책 연계, 지역 산업 특성 반영을 목표로 구성됐다. 국책 연구기관을 비롯해 글로벌 AI 공급기업과 지역 주력 산업체, 지역 연구기관 임직원 등 총 28명이 위원으로 위촉됐으며, 향후 세부분과별 포럼을 정례화해 실질적인 정책 논의를 이어갈 계획이다.

위원회는 앞으로 구미시 AI 비전 및 중·장기 전략 수립에 대한 자문을 비롯해 구미형 인공지능 산업 발전 방안과 주요 정책과제 논의, AI 기술 동향 공유, 신규 사업 발굴 등 구미 AI 정책 전반을 이끄는 핵심 역할을 수행하게 된다.

이날 회의에서는 급변하는 글로벌 AX(AI 전환) 흐름에 대응하기 위한 전략도 집중 논의됐다. 구미가 보유한 반도체·방산 등 첨단 제조 역량과 AI 데이터센터 인프라를 결합해 ‘글로벌 AI 제조 데이터 시티’로 도약하기 위한 4대 핵심 전략으로 ▲AX 실증단지 조성을 통한 국가산단 AI 대전환 ▲구미형 제조 AX 파운데이션 모델 구축 ▲제조 AI 학습데이터 축적을 통한 산업 AI 데이터 거점 조성 ▲인재 양성·R&D 지원·창업 활성화를 아우르는 AI 혁신 생태계 구축이 제시됐다.

구미시는 최근 대규모 AI 데이터센터 유치와 국책사업 선정 성과를 통해 이러한 전략의 실행 가능성을 입증하고 있다. 올해 1월 삼성SDS와 60MW급 하이퍼스케일 AI 데이터센터 건립을 위한 업무협약을 체결했으며, 지난해 12월에는 퀀텀일레븐 컨소시엄과 아시아 최대급인 1.3GW 규모의 첨단 AI 데이터센터 클러스터 조성을 위한 협약을 체결했다.

이와 함께 지능 온디바이스 망연동 시험 플랫폼 개발, AI 팩토리 시스템 개발, 산업 AI 솔루션 실증·확산 지원사업 등 다수의 산업 AI 분야 국책사업에 잇따라 선정되며 지역 기업 경쟁력 강화에도 속도를 내고 있다.

시는 실행력 강화를 위해 전담 조직도 선제적으로 구축했다. 지난 1월 AI 혁신 TF를 출범해 정책 지원, 산업 육성, 인프라 구축, 인재 양성 등 4개 실무반을 운영 중이며, 지난해 말에는 대규모 AI 데이터센터 구축을 전주기로 지원하는 ‘구미 AI 첨단 디지털 클러스터 원스톱 지원단’을 출범시켰다.

구미시는 이번 위원회 논의 결과를 토대로 향후 ‘구미시 AI 비전 선포식’을 열고, 구체적인 실행 청사진을 시민들에게 공개할 계획이다.

김장호 구미시장은 “1970년대 구미가 국가 경제의 심장으로 한강의 기적을 이끌었다면, 이제는 AI라는 새로운 엔진을 달고 다시 도약할 시점”이라며 “글로벌 파트너와 관계기관, 지역 기업들과 함께 구미를 청년 인재와 첨단 기업이 모여드는 글로벌 제조 AI 데이터 시티로 만들어가겠다”고 말했다.

Gumi City Launches 'AI Vision Committee'… Kicks Off to Become a Global AI Manufacturing Data City

On January 29th, Gumi City launched the 'Gumi City AI Vision Committee' in the City Hall auditorium, marking the start of a full-scale effort to realize its vision of becoming a 'Global AI Manufacturing Data City, Gumi.'

The event brought together experts from industry, research institutes, and the public sector to discuss the mid- to long-term roadmap and key strategic tasks for Gumi's AI policy.

The Gumi City AI Vision Committee was formed with the goal of strengthening expertise, aligning with government policies, and reflecting the unique characteristics of local industries. A total of 28 members were appointed, including representatives from national research institutes, global AI suppliers, key local industries, and local research institutes. The committee plans to hold regular forums for each sub-committee to foster substantive policy discussions.

The committee will play a key role in leading Gumi's overall AI policy, including advising on the establishment of Gumi's AI vision and mid- to long-term strategies, discussing Gumi-style AI industry development plans and key policy tasks, sharing AI technology trends, and identifying new businesses.

The meeting also focused on strategies for responding to the rapidly changing global AX (AI Transition) trend. Four key strategies were proposed to combine Gumi's advanced manufacturing capabilities in the semiconductor and defense industries with its AI data center infrastructure to transform the city into a "Global AI Manufacturing Data City." These strategies include: ▲ A major transformation of national industrial complexes through the creation of an AX demonstration complex; ▲ Establishing a Gumi-style manufacturing AX foundation model; ▲ Establishing an industrial AI data hub through the accumulation of manufacturing AI learning data; and ▲ Establishing an AI innovation ecosystem encompassing talent development, R&D support, and startup revitalization.

Gumi has recently demonstrated the feasibility of this strategy through its successful hosting of a large-scale AI data center and selection for a national project. In January of this year, the city signed a business agreement with Samsung SDS to build a 60MW hyperscale AI data center. In December of last year, the city signed an agreement with the Quantum Eleven consortium to build a 1.3GW advanced AI data center cluster, the largest of its kind in Asia.

Furthermore, the city has been selected for a number of national projects in the industrial AI sector, including the development of an intelligent on-device network interconnection test platform, the development of an AI factory system, and the support project for the verification and expansion of industrial AI solutions. This has accelerated the competitiveness of local businesses.

To strengthen its execution capabilities, the city has proactively established a dedicated organization. In January, the city launched an AI Innovation Task Force, operating four working groups focused on policy support, industry development, infrastructure development, and talent development. At the end of last year, the city launched the "Gumi AI Advanced Digital Cluster One-Stop Support Team," which provides full-cycle support for the construction of large-scale AI data centers.

Based on the results of this committee's discussions, the city plans to hold a "Gumi City AI Vision Declaration Ceremony" and share a detailed blueprint for implementation with the public.

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, "If Gumi served as the heart of the national economy in the 1970s, driving the Miracle on the Han River, now is the time to leap forward again, powered by a new engine: AI." He added, "Together with global partners, related organizations, and local businesses, we will transform Gumi into a global manufacturing, AI, and data city, attracting young talent and cutting-edge companies."
