경북대학교는 지난 2009년 대구시와 협약을 맺고 달성군 유가읍 용리 일대 4개 필지에 약 30만 ㎡ 규모의 테크노폴리스 캠퍼스를 조성하기로 했으며 2014년 일부 부지(8만5천 ㎡)에 대해 매입계약을 체결한 후, 등기까지 마쳤으나 그동안 캠퍼스 조성이 지지부진했다. 

캠퍼스부지는 대구수목원에서 시작하는 테크노폴리스로가 끝나고 테크노순환로가 시작하는 지점에 있어 테크노폴리스에서도 가장 접근성이 좋은 곳이지만 경북대학교가 국립대라는 한계로 인해 재원 확보가 어려워 그동안 대학 내에서도 애물단지 취급하면서 사실상 방치해 왔다. 

이러한 분위기가 뒤바뀐 것은 지난해부터 추경호 의원이 경북대학교와 대구시를 설득하고, 테크노플리스에 ‘테스트베드형 캠퍼스’를 조성하겠다고 공약했던 경북대학교 홍원화 총장이 적극 화답하면서 해결의 실마리가 마련되기 시작했다. 

추 의원은 지난해 예산 심의 과정에서 경북대학교가 제안한 ‘전파플레이그라운드’ 사업 예산이 증액 반영되도록 했고, 대구시는 과학기술정보통신부의 공모 선정에 필수적인 건축비를 지원하기로 하면서 경북대학교 달성 테크노폴리스 캠퍼스의 첫 시설인 ‘전파플레이그라운드’를 구축하게 되었다.  

경북대학교는 테크노폴리스 캠퍼스 조성에 적극적인 의지를 나타내고 있는데 국립대 회계 예산 사용이 불가능한 상황이므로 대학이 자유롭게 사용할 수 있는 발전기금 약 10억원을 투입하여 원형지 상태인 테크노폴리스 부지의 기반을 조성하기로 했다.

또 대학 내 IT대학 및 공과대학 교수들을 중심으로 다양한 아이디어를 모으고 있으며, 첨단모빌리티 분야 연구시설 조성에 우선 힘을 모으기로 했다. 

경북대학교의 계획대로 추진될 경우, 기존의 테크노폴리스에 운영 중인 자율주행차실증도로 및 조성 예정인 국가로봇테스필드와 함께 경북대학교의 우수한 연구역량이 결합되어 시너지 효과를 창출할 것으로 기대된다. 

지역 최대 연구역량을 가진 경북대학교의 테크노폴리스 캠퍼스 조성은 텍폴 산단이 생산ㆍ연구가 결합된 첨단산업단지로 도약하는 마지막 퍼즐로 여겨져 왔다. 텍폴 캠퍼스가 조성되면 지역 교육 수준과 첨단산업이 한단계 업그레이드 될 것으로 기대된다.

추경호 의원은 “경북대학교가 테크노폴리스 캠퍼스를 조성한다는 얘기가 처음 나온 지 20년이 되었다”며, “전파플레이그라운드 사업 유치로 달성군민의 오랜 기대에 부응할 수 있게 되어 기쁘다. 함께 노력한 경북대학교와 지원을 아끼지 않은 대구시에 감사의 마음을 전하며, 경북대 텍폴 캠퍼스가 성공적으로 조성될 수 있도록 앞으로 적극 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다.
