구미시에 따르면 이날 투자양해각서(MOU) 체결식은 윤석열 대통령, 이창양 산업통상자원부 장관, 한화진 환경부 장관, 경상북도 이철우 지사, SK그룹 최태원 회장, SK실트론 장용호 사장, 지역 국회의원 등이 참석한 가운데 이뤄졌으며 이후 고순도 공업용수 실증플랜트 사업 현장을 답사가 이어졌다.

SK실트론은 구미에 본사를 둔 반도체 핵심부품 제조 글로벌 기업으로, 지난해 3월 1조 495억 원의 투자를 시작으로 금년에도 1조 2,360억 원의 대규모 투자를 단행하여, 2023년 ~ 2026년까지 총 2조 2,855억 원을 투자하게 된다.

최근 모바일, PC 등 소비재 단기수요 둔화로 반도체 업황의 일시적인 하락이 전망되고 있으나 데이터센터, 서버 등 클라우드 산업의 성장으로 향후 1~2년 내 재상승할 것으로 예상되어 미래 시장 변화에 대응하기 위해 선제적 투자를 결정했다.

또한 SK실트론은 한국수자원공사, 한국환경산업기술원 등과 함께 반도체용‘고순도 공업용수(초순수) 실증플랜트’사업을 진행 중이다.

고순도 공업용수 실증플랜트 사업은 반도체용 초순수 생산기술 국산화를 위한 첫걸음으로 총사업비 480억 규모로 2021년 ~ 2025년까지 이루어지며, 2025년까지 하루 2,400톤의 초순수를 생산하는 실증플랜트를 설치․운영하여 관련 생산공정의 설계․운영 기술 100%, 시공 기술 및 기자재 60% 국산화를 목표로 하고 있다.

구미시는 이번 SK실트론의 투자와 ㈜원익큐엔씨, ㈜월덱스, ㈜코마테크놀로지 등 반도체 기업의 투자가 계속되고 있어 첨단 반도체 소재․부품․설계 특화단지 지정에 한 걸음 다가섰다.
