화마 속에서도 마지막 순간까지 고운사를 지키기 위해 사투를 벌인 이들이 있었다. 바로 경산소방서 재난대응과장 이종혁 대원을 포함한 11명의 소방관들이다. 불길은 빠르게 번졌고, 강한 바람까지 겹쳐 진압이 쉽지 않은 상황이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 소방대원들은 사찰의 문화재를 보호하고 더 큰 피해를 막기 위해 현장에 남아 불길과 싸우며 마지막까지 사찰을 지키려 필사의 노력을 했다.

한 대원은 “오랜 역사를 자랑하는 문화유산이 불타는 모습을 보며 주어진 위험을 외면할 수 없었다”고 말했다. 그들의 헌신적인 노력에도 불구하고 사찰은 끝내 불길을 이기지 못했지만, 이들이 없었다면 사찰 주변 상황은 훨씬 더 심각했을 것으로 보인다.

박성열 경북소방본부장은 “열한 명의 대원들은 자신의 안전을 뒤로한 채 끝까지 사찰을 지키기 위해 헌신했다. 그들의 용기와 희생정신은 우리가 반드시 기억해야 할 것”이라며 깊은 경의를 표했다. 이어 “우리는 빠른 시일 내 산불 진화 작업을 완료해 더 이상의 큰 피해가 발생하지 않기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 덧붙였다.

한 시민은 "천년 역사의 고운사는 사라졌지만, 그 마지막 순간까지 이를 지키려 했던 소방관들의 헌신은 영원히 기억될 것"이라며 "그들의 묵묵한 사명감에 다시 한번 감사와 경의를 표한다"고 말했다.
