이 지사는 대통령의 이 발언을 ‘주변 인사들의 배신에 깊이 상처받은 것으로 짐작된다’고 풀이했다. 이어 “헌법재판소 판결도 막판에 뒤집어진 것으로 생각하시고 매우 상심하는 모습이었고, 건강상의 이유로 평소와 달리 약주도 한 잔 안하셔서 걱정이 된다”고 우려의 글을 올렸다. 

이 지사의 이 같은 대선 일정 보고(?)가 페북에 올라오자 이를 본 사람들 간 논란이 일고 있다. 일부에서는 이 지사와 윤 전 대통령의 콤비를 강조하며 안타깝다는 반응을 나타내며 이철우 지사를 응원하는가 하면, 다른 일각에서는 윤 대통령의 ‘충성심’이라는 단어에 매우 흥분하며 윤 전 대통령과 이철우 지사를 싸잡아 비난하는 글들이 올라왔다.

이철우 도지사도 비난에서 자유롭지 못했다. 한 네티즌은 “당신은 정치하면 안 되는 사람"이라고 쏘아붙였다. 그는 "경북 산불 피해로 제일 열심히 뛰어다녀야 할 사람이 도민은 나 몰라라. 표 구걸할 때는 간 쓸게 다 빼 줄 것처럼 하면서 정작 제일 힘들 때는 자기의 개인 영달을 위해서 버리고 떠나는 구태들의 민낯. 욕도 아까운 사람”이라는 퍼부었다. 또다른 이는 “탄핵당한 대통령에게 허락 받으러오는 걸 누가 뽑아주냐”고 윤심팔이를 저격하기도 했다.

약주 한 잔 못하는 것에 대한 안타까움을 표현한 대목과 (윤 전 대통령이) 헌법재판소 판결에 대한 이 지사의 표현과 관련, 인터넷에서는 “나라 망친 전직 대통령이 이 판국에 술 한 잔 못하고 있는 것을 광역단체장이 안타까움을 표현할 정도면 평상시 대통령이란 사람은 얼마나 술을 많이 먹었던 것이냐”고 윤석열과 이철우 지사를 싸잡아 비판했다.

무엇보다 윤 전 대통령과의 만남 소식에 국민의힘 일각에서조차 이 지사의 대선 출마를 두고 고개를 젓는 모습들이 많아졌다. 국민의힘 대구 모 지역 기초의원들은 이날 "이 지사가 국민의힘 대선 흥행을 위한 불쏘시개 역할을 하기 위해 다른 단체장들과 연대해 움직인 것으로 알고 있다"면서도 "초대형 산불이라는 의외의 변수가 발생한 상황에서 출마를 강행한 것은 상식에서 벗어난 행보"라고 강조하고 "그런 역할이라면 차라리 다른 지자체장이 대리 출마할 수있도록 하는 게 옳았다. 누가 뭐라해도 그의 이번 출마강행은 도민보다는 당을 우선에 둔 비상식적인 행보"라고 고개를 저었다.
