그동안 재정여건에 따라 무상급식이 순차적으로 확대ㆍ시행됨에 따라 학교급별로 상이한 분담비율로 인한 복잡한 예산편성 및 집행ㆍ정산과정에 어려움이 있었다.
이에 대구시교육청과 대구시는 학교무상급식 예산의 모든 학교급별 분담비율을 통일하기로 하면서 대구시의 재정여건을 감안하여 2023년 전체 무상급식 예산 총액 2,007억원 중 인건비와 운영비(245억원)는 교육청이 모두 부담하기로 합의하였으며 급식에 들어가는 식품비(1,762억원)는 교육청과 대구시가 각각 60%와 40%를 분담하기로 합의했다.
이와 함께 지난해까지 대구시교육청에서 전액 지원하던 공립유치원의 급식비도 올해부터는 대구시와 대구시교육청이 통일된 분담비율로 함께 지원하기로 함으로써, 총 무상급식비의 식품비 예산 1,762억원 중 대구시교육청은 1,057억원, 대구시는 705억원을 각각 분담하게 된다.
이로써 대구시교육청은 대구시가 부담하던 241억 원을 추가 부담하게 되었으나 현행과 같이 학교 급식의 질을 최대한 유지하면서 대구시와의 원만한 관계를 유지한다는 방침이라고 밝혔다.
