동구지역 주민들의 배기철 동구청장에 대한 교체열망은 상당히 강했다. 결국 배 구청장은 국민의힘 예비후보 경선조차 통과하지 못하고 1차 경선에서 컷오프됐다. 이는 대구는 물론, 전국에서도 유일한 사례로 기록이 됐다. 

한때 무소속 출마설까지 돌았던 배 구청장은 돌연 30일 경쟁자였던 우성진 예비후보를 지지한다고 밝혔다. 우성진 예비후보는 예비경선 과정에서 ‘배기철 동구청장의 컷오프’를 줄기차게 주장해왔던 인물 중 한 사람이었다. 그랬던 사람을 지지한다고 밝히자 지역정가는 의아하다며 당황한 기색이 역력하다.

다만, 기업가 출신의 우성진 예비후보가 이 같은 묘수를 사용환 것에 대한 평가는 갈리고 있다. 긍정적으로 보는 이들은 “어떡하든 밀리고 있는 입장에서는 누구라도 지지를 이끌어 내야한다”며 “배 구청장을 자신의 편으로 만든 것은 좋은 아이디어”라고 평가했다.

이에 반해 부정적으로 보는 이들은 “배기철 구청장은 교체지수가 상당히 높은 현역 구청장이다. 본 경선에도 올라보지 못한 현역인데 그가 누구를 지지한다고 도움이 될 런지는 의문이다. 오히려 배 구청장의 지지선언이 그동안 우성진 예비후보를 지지해왔던 이들의 이탈을 가져올 가능성이 높고, 배기철을 지지했던 이들이 우성진 후보를 지지한다는 보장도 없다. 그렇게 보면 배 구청장의 지지선언은 큰 의미는 없을 것”이라고 분석했다.

단순한 수치 계산 말고도 정치적으로도 이번 지지선언이 우성진 예비후보에게는 도움보다는 역효과를 가져 올 것이란 분석이 많았다.

우선, 배기철 구청장과 손을 잡은 우성진 예비후보의 행보는 강대식 국회의원과 각을 세운 것이란 해석을 할 수밖에 없다는 분석이다. 평소 선거를 두 번이나 함께 했다며 강 의원과의 인연을 강조해왔던 우성진 예비후보다. 그런 그가 강 의원과는 대립해 있는 배기철 구청장에 손을 내민 것은 결국 강 의원을 배신한 것이란 주장이다.

정가에서는 그동안 중립적 행보를 취해왔던 강대식 의원과 류성걸 의원이 이제까지와는 다른 결심을 할 것이란 전망이 나오고 있다. 실제, 국민의힘의 동구 지역 기초단체장 경선 여론조사는 5월 1일과 2일 실시된다. 두 지역구(동구 갑, 동구을) 국회의원, 특히 강 의원의 행보가 관심을 모으는 이유다.

우 예비후보에게 지금은 여론조사만큼 당심이 절대적으로 필요한 시기다. 정가는 “그런 상황에서 우+배의 그림은 매우 적절하지 않다”는 분석을 내놨다.

When he revealed that he supported the person who did that, the local list price was questionable, and he showed a sign of embarrassment.

However, the evaluation of candidate Woo Seong-jin, a former entrepreneur, using such a trick is divided.

Those who viewed it positively said, "No matter what happens, anyone who is being pushed back must elicit support.

On the other hand, those who view it negatively said, “Gu mayor Bae Gi-cheol is an active district mayor with a fairly high replacement index. He is an active player who has not even made it to the main competition, but it is questionable who he will support will help. Rather, the declaration of support for mayor Bae is highly likely to lead to the departure of those who have supported candidate Woo Seong-jin, and there is no guarantee that those who supported Bae Bae-cheol will support candidate Woo Seong-jin. In that way, Mayor Bae’s declaration of support would not have much meaning.”

In addition to simple numerical calculations, politically, there were many analyzes that this declaration of support would have the opposite effect rather than help for candidate Woo Seong-jin.

First of all, the analysis of preliminary candidate Woo Seong-jin, who joined hands with district mayor Bae Bae-cheol, can only be interpreted as establishing an affair with National Assemblyman Kang Dae-sik. Preliminary candidate Woo Seong-jin, who has always emphasized his relationship with Rep. Kang by saying that he had participated in the election twice. It is argued that the fact that he reached out to the mayor Bae Bae-cheol, who can be said to be the antithesis of Rep. Kang, ultimately betrayed Rep. Kang.

It is predicted that lawmakers Dae-shik Kang and Seong-geol Ryu, who have taken neutral steps in the past, will make a different decision than before. In fact, the polls for the election for the head of the Dong-gu regional basic group of People's Power will be conducted on May 1st and 2nd. This is the reason why members of the two constituencies (Gap, Dong-gu, and Dong-gu-eul), especially member Kang, are attracting attention.

For Candidate Woo, this is a time when party sympathy is absolutely needed as much as polls. Jung Ga gave an analysis saying, “In such a situation, the picture of Woo + Bae is not very appropriate.”
