박정희 전 대통령 생가가 있는 구미에서 출마를 선언하고, 다른 후보들도 생가를 많이 찾는 이유에 대해서는 "경북이 산업화의 심장이었던 시절의 경제 재건 염원을 상징하는 것"이라고 설명했다. 그러면서 "평생 경제 현장에서 쌓은 경험과 인맥을 고향 경북을 위해 쏟아붓겠다”고 강조한 그는 “경북의 멈춘 심장을 다시 뛰게 할 '경제 도지사'가 되겠다"고 포부를 밝혔다.
