그는 경찰이 자신과 도청 공무원들을 대상으로 수사를 진행하는 것에 대해 “엉터리 소설 같은 수사”라고 비판했다.

경찰은 2021년 포항의 한 언론사가 허위사실로 도지사를 협박했고, 이 도지사가 차년도 선거를 의식해 해당 언론사가 주최한 드론축구대회에 특혜성 보조금을 지원했다는 의혹을 제기하며 압수수색을 단행했다.

이에 대해 이 도지사는 “전제 자체가 허위”라며 “도지사가 언론사의 취재본부 하나에 굴복했다는 것은 상식적으로도 말이 안 된다”고 반박했다. 

이어 “산전수전을 다 겪은 정치인으로서 도지사 취임 직후 전 언론사에 지급되는 홍보비 예산을 일괄 30% 삭감했을 정도의 자신이 두려움에 보조금을 지급했다는 주장은 터무니없다”고 말했다.

또한 “해당 언론사 관계자와 직접 만난 적도, 연락을 주고받은 적도 없으며, 협박이나 취재 요청도 받은 바 없다”며 경찰 수사의 근거 자체에 문제를 제기했다.

이 도지사는 2022년 지방선거 당시  ‘경상북도지사 선거에 도전자가 없다’는 당시 언론 보도를 인용하며 경찰의 수사 논리를 반박했다. “선거를 의식해 보조금을 지급할 동기도 없었고, 평생 그런 식으로 살아오지도 않았다”고 덧붙였다.

또한 “국회의원 시절, 사드 배치에 유일하게 찬성한 의원일 정도로 신념에 따라 행동해 왔으며, 선거 유불리를 따지며 정책을 결정한 적이 없다”고 말했다.

드론축구대회 지원과 관련해서는 “해당 사업은 청년들이 먼저 요청했고, 도정의 핵심 산업인 드론 진흥 정책과 관련된 공약 사항”이라며 “2019년 김천에서 시작돼 2021년부터는 포항에서 매년 열리고 있는 지속적인 사업”이라고 설명했다. 

당시 예산은 실·국장 책임 하에 원칙에 따라 심사됐으며, 요청액 1억 3,500만 원에서 8,100만 원을 삭감해 5,400만 원의 도비만 지원한 것으로 확정됐음을 강조했다.

이 도지사는 “이번 수사로 인해 공무원들이 2년 넘게 조사를 받고 있어 조직의 사기가 저하되고 있다”며 “변호사 지원과 심리적 부담 해소에 최선을 다해 조직을 보호하겠다”고 밝혔다.

끝으로 그는 “청렴은 시대를 초월한 원칙”이라며 “경북도는 전국 최고 수준의 청렴도를 달성했고, ‘감방 안 가면 다 해주라’는 적극행정 정신으로 62조 원 규모의 민간 투자와 국비를 확보했다”고 덧붙였다. 

아울러 “경북도 공무원들과 공공기관 임직원들은 부당한 수사에 흔들리지 말고 청렴하고 떳떳하게 적극행정을 이어가 달라”고 강조했다.

Governor Lee refuted the police's investigation logic, citing a media report from the 2022 local elections stating, "There are no candidates for the North Gyeongsang Province gubernatorial election." He added, "I had no motivation to provide subsidies for the sake of the election, and I have never lived that way my entire life."

He also stated, "As a member of the National Assembly, I was the only member to support the THAAD deployment. I have acted according to my convictions. I have never made policy decisions based on electoral gains or disadvantages."

Regarding the support for the drone soccer tournament, he explained, "This project was first requested by young people and is part of a campaign promise related to the provincial government's drone promotion policy, a core industry. It is an ongoing project that began in Gimcheon in 2019 and will be held annually in Pohang starting in 2021."

He emphasized that the budget at the time was reviewed in accordance with principles under the responsibility of the directors and bureau chiefs, and that 81 million won was cut from the requested 135 million won, resulting in only 54 million won in provincial funds.

Governor Lee stated, "This investigation has left public officials under investigation for over two years, damaging the organization's morale. We will do our utmost to protect the organization by providing legal support and alleviating their psychological burden."

Finally, he stated, "Integrity is a timeless principle," adding, "Gyeongsangbuk-do Province has achieved the highest level of integrity in the nation and secured 62 trillion won in private investment and national funding through the proactive administration spirit of 'Do whatever it takes to avoid jail.'"

He also emphasized, "Gyeongsangbuk-do public officials and public institution executives should not be swayed by the unfair investigation and should continue to practice proactive administration with integrity and honor."
