경북경찰청 반부패경제범죄수사1대는 지난 28일 이 지사의 관사를 압수수색했다고 밝혔다. 2022년 포항에서 열린 한 인터넷 언론사 행사 보조금과 관련해 경북도가 혜택을 줬다는 의혹을 확인하기 위해서다.

경찰은 압수수색에서 이 지사의 휴대전화와 관련 서류 등을 확보한 것으로 알려졌다. 당시 경북도청 기획조정실장이었던 김장호 구미시장도 참고인 신분으로 조사받았다.

경찰은 이번 사건과 관련해 지난해 11월부터 경북도 전·현직 공무원 5명을 피의자로 조사하고 있다. 지난 2월에는 경북도청 관련 부서에 대해서도 압수수색을 실시했다. 이 지사에게는 오는 9월 중 출석 조사를 받을 것을 통보했다.

경북도 관계자는 "이철우 도지사가 피의자 신분이 아닌 참고인 신분으로 압수수색을 받았다"며 "경북도는 예산 집행에 있어 잘못한 게 없다"고 말했다.

이 지사는 같은 날 성명을 내고 강력히 반발했다. 그는 "하늘을 우러러 한 점 부끄럼이 없다"며 "경찰이 제시한 것은 전혀 사실이 아니다"라고 밝혔다.

이 지사는 지난해 경찰이 자신에 대한 압수수색을 시도했으나 "신분 등 기본적 사실관계조차 틀릴 정도로 허술하게 작성되어 검찰에서 허락하지 않았다"고 말했다.

"정권이 바뀌자 곧바로 다시 압수수색을 시도한 것은 새로운 권력 앞에 '한 건 하자'는 욕심에 스스로 '정치 경찰'의 길로 가겠다는 선언이냐"고 비판했다.

이 지사는 최근 건강상 문제로 요양이 필요한 상황이라고 밝혔다. 그는 "절대 요양이 필요한 암 환자를 탄압하다니 경찰은 피도 눈물도 없느냐며 주위에서 분개하고 있다"면서도 "있지 않은 일이기에 당당히 대응하겠다"고 강조했다.

The governor recently announced that he needed medical treatment due to health issues. He said, "People around me are outraged, asking if the police are heartless and cruel, oppressing a cancer patient who desperately needs medical treatment." However, he emphasized, "This is absurd, and I will respond with dignity."

"I strongly condemn the political police's absurd investigation into the case," he said. "I will uncover the truth and protect the honor of my hard-working public servants and myself."

Governor Lee added, "I will provide the residents with a detailed account of this incident at a later date."
