이 같은 변화는 최 전 부총리에게 상당히 유리한 국면이라는 평가가 나온다. 최 전 부총리는 박근혜 정부 시절 경제부총리를 지낸 대표적 친박 핵심 인사이자, TK 지역에서 확고한 정치적 기반을 보유한 인물이다. 이번 출판기념회에 친박 원로와 현역 의원들이 대거 모습을 드러낸 것 역시, 보수 진영 내에서 최 전 부총리를 중심으로 한 재결집 가능성을 보여주는 장면으로 해석된다.

그는 ”이곳(대구경북)에 오면 위안을 많이 받았다. 여러분이 최경환 총리 키웠지 않느냐. 그리고 많이 써 먹지 않았느냐. 많은 이들이 잘했다고 그랬다“고 강조하고 ”이제는 여러분들이 길을 열어주셔야 한다. 대한민국의 박정희 대통령, 박근혜 대통령 뒤를 이어서 나라를 위해서 일할 사람을 여러분이 만들어 주셔야 된다“고 거듭 강조했다.

이어 그는 ”이런 사람 하나 키워내지 못하면 여러분들이 TK라고, 경상이라고 그러고 대구라고 무슨 할 말이 있느냐. 내가 이 말을 하러 의정부에서 여기까지 왔다“고 외쳤다. 객석은 순식간에 환호성으로 바뀌었다. 경북의 아들로 돌아오겠다는 (최경환을) 말이 아니라 책임지라는 얘기다. 

최경환 전 부총리의 출판기념회는 개인의 정치 재개를 알리는 자리를 넘어 친박 진영을 축으로 한 새로운 보수 결집 가능성을 시험하는 무대였다는 분석이다. 당내 권력 구도 변화와 지지층 이동이라는 구조적 흐름 속에서, 최경환이라는 이름이 다시 정치 지형의 중심으로 부상할 수 있을지 정치권의 시선이 쏠리고 있다.
