【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=대구한의대학교(총장 변창훈)는 2월 11일 경산캠퍼스 기린체육관에서 제10대 변창훈 총장 취임식을 열고 향후 4년간 대학을 이끌 새 출발을 공식화했다. 이날 행사에는 교내외 인사와 대학 구성원 등 500여 명이 참석해 네 번째 연임을 축하했다.

변 총장은 제7·8·9대에 이어 10대 총장으로 선임되며 4연임을 맡게 됐다. 임기는 2025년 12월 23일부터 2029년 12월 22일까지다. 이번 연임은 지난 10여 년간 추진해 온 대학 혁신과 대형 국책사업 성과에 대한 내부 신뢰를 재확인한 결과로 평가된다.

취임식에는 학교법인 제한학원 기우항 이사장, 변정환 명예총장, 조재구 대구 남구청장, 양오봉 한국대학교육협의회 회장, 노찬용 한국대학법인협의회 회장, 정기환 대구경북지방중소벤처기업청장, 이기정 한양대학교 총장, 이재수 총동창회 회장 등 주요 인사들이 참석했다. 행사는 홍보영상 상영, 총장 약력 소개, 임명장 수여, 교기 인계, 취임사, 축하 영상 및 축전 소개 순으로 진행됐다.

변 총장은 취임사에서 “4연임이라는 자리에 감사보다 책임의 무게를 더 크게 느낀다”며 “대구한의대를 ‘지키는 대학’이 아닌 ‘앞서가는 대학’으로 도약시키겠다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “지역의 K-MEDI 기업이 세계로 진출하고, 글로벌 인재가 지역에 정착하는 선순환 구조를 완성해 글로컬대학30의 실질적 성과를 창출하겠다”고 강조했다.

그동안 변 총장은 지역혁신중심대학지원체계(RISE), 대학혁신지원사업, LINC 3.0, PRIME, CORE, CK-1 등 주요 국책사업을 연이어 유치하며 교육·연구·산학협력 인프라를 확장해 왔다. 누적 사업 규모는 2,500억 원을 넘어섰다.

이 같은 기반 위에서 대구한의대는 지난해 교육부 ‘글로컬대학30’ 사업에 선정됐다. ‘K-MEDI 실크로드’ 비전을 앞세워 확보한 총 4,456억 원 규모(국고 및 지자체 포함)의 프로젝트는 대학 혁신을 넘어 지역과 연계한 글로벌 모델 구축의 전환점이 될 것으로 기대된다.

대학은 이와 함께 국가서비스대상 6회 연속 수상, 중소기업기술혁신대전 산학협력 부문 대통령 표창 2회 수상 등 대외 성과를 통해 교육 혁신과 산학협력 경쟁력을 입증해 왔다.

변 총장은 영남대학교에서 학·석사를, 미국 프랫 인스티튜트에서 건축학 석사를, 영남대학교에서 공학박사 학위를 취득했다. 현재 한국사립대학총장협의회 회장, 한국대학교육협의회 부회장 등을 맡아 대학 정책 및 고등교육 현안 논의에 참여하고 있다.

대구한의대는 향후 글로컬대학30과 RISE 사업을 연계해 교육·연구·산학협력·취업이 선순환하는 ‘지역 기반 글로벌 대학’ 모델을 본격적으로 구축해 나간다는 계획이다.

Daegu Haany University Inaugurates 10th President Byun Chang-hoon… “Beyond a Protecting University, to a Leading University”

Daegu Haany University (President Byun Chang-hoon) held an inauguration ceremony for its 10th President Byun Chang-hoon at the Kirin Gymnasium on the Gyeongsan Campus on February 11th, officially marking a new beginning for him to lead the university for the next four years. Approximately 500 people, including both internal and external figures and university members, attended the event to celebrate his fourth term.

President Byun was elected as the 10th president, following his 7th, 8th, and 9th terms. His term runs from December 23, 2025, to December 22, 2029. This reappointment is seen as a reaffirmation of internal trust in the university's tenure of innovation and the achievements of major national projects over the past decade.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key figures, including Ki-Woo Hang, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Jehang Academy Foundation; Honorary President Byun Jeong-Hwan; Mayor Cho Jae-Gu of Nam-Gu District, Daegu; Yang Oh-Bong, Chairman of the Korean Council for University Education; Noh Chan-Yong, Chairman of the Korean Council for University Corporations; Jeong Gi-Hwan, Commissioner of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional SMEs and Startups Agency; Lee Ki-Jeong, President of Hanyang University; and Lee Jae-Soo, President of the Alumni Association. The ceremony consisted of a promotional video screening, introductions of the presidents' biographies, the presentation of their certificates of appointment, the presentation of the university flag, an inaugural address, and a congratulatory video and message.

In his inaugural address, President Byun stated, "I feel a greater sense of responsibility than gratitude for this fourth consecutive term. I will transform Daegu Haany University from a 'protective university' to a 'leading university.'" He continued, "I will create tangible results for Daegu Haany University 30 by establishing a virtuous cycle where local K-MEDI companies expand into the global market and global talent settles in the region."

President Byun has expanded the infrastructure for education, research, and industry-academia cooperation by securing a series of key national projects, including the Regional Innovation-Oriented University Support System (RISE), the University Innovation Support Project, LINC 3.0, PRIME, CORE, and CK-1. The cumulative project budget has exceeded KRW 250 billion.

Building on this foundation, Daegu Haany University was selected for the Ministry of Education's "Glocal University 30" project last year. Driven by the "K-MEDI Silk Road" vision, this project, worth a total of KRW 445.6 billion (including national and local government funds), is expected to mark a turning point in establishing a global model that connects universities with local communities, transcending university innovation.

Furthermore, the university has demonstrated its competitiveness in educational innovation and industry-academia cooperation through external achievements, including six consecutive National Service Awards and two Presidential Commendations in the Industry-Academic Cooperation category at the Small and Medium Business Technology Innovation Competition.

President Byun earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Yeungnam University, his master's degree in architecture from Pratt Institute in the United States, and his doctorate in engineering from Yeungnam University. He currently serves as Chairman of the Korean Council of Private University Presidents and Vice Chairman of the Korean Council for University Education, where he actively participates in discussions on university policy and higher education issues.

Daegu Haany University plans to actively build a "regional-based global university" model by linking it with the Glocal University 30 and RISE projects, fostering a virtuous cycle of education, research, industry-academia cooperation, and employment.
