【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국수력원자력(한수원)이 지난 1일 싱가포르 현지에서 싱가포르 에너지시장청(EMA)과 소형모듈원자로(SMR) 분야 기술 교류 및 협력 강화를 위한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다.

이번 협약은 한-싱가포르 정상회의를 계기로 진행됐으며, 체결식에는 전대욱 한수원 사장 직무대행과 콕 키옹 푸아(Kok Keong Puah) EMA 청장이 참석했다.

양 기관은 이번 MOU를 통해 ▲싱가포르 내 SMR 적용 가능성 공동 조사 ▲원자력 전문 인력 양성 ▲기술 정보 및 원자력 모범 사례 공유 등 다양한 분야에서 협력하기로 했다. SMR 도입 타당성 검토 단계부터 기술·제도적 기반을 함께 모색한다는 데 의미가 있다.

특히 이번 협약은 싱가포르 정부기관이 한국 원전 기업과 체결한 최초의 원자력 협력 MOU라는 점에서 주목된다. 교역·투자 중심으로 발전해 온 양국 경제 협력이 미래 에너지 분야로 확장됐다는 점에서도 상징성이 크다.

콕 키옹 푸아 EMA 청장은 “에너지 자원이 제한적인 소규모 국가로서 저탄소 전환 과정에서 에너지 안보와 회복력 강화를 위한 모든 가능성을 면밀히 검토해야 한다”며 “첨단 원자력 기술은 청정 에너지원으로서 잠재력을 지니고 있으며, 한수원과의 협력은 SMR에 대한 기술적 이해를 높이고 적합성을 보다 신중하고 엄격하게 평가하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

전대욱 한수원 사장 직무대행은 “한수원은 원전 운영 경험과 기술 전문성을 바탕으로 글로벌 에너지 전환에 대응해 왔다”며 “EMA가 SMR 기술의 안전성과 타당성을 검토하는 과정에서 책임 있는 파트너로 적극 협력해 의미 있는 성과로 이어지도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Signs SMR Cooperation MOU with Singapore's EMA

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) on April 1st in Singapore to strengthen technological exchange and cooperation in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs).

This agreement, which took place on the occasion of the Korea-Singapore Summit, was signed by KHNP Acting President and CEO Jeon Dae-wook and EMA Director General Kok Keong Puah.

Through this MOU, the two organizations agreed to collaborate in various areas, including jointly investigating the feasibility of SMR deployment in Singapore, training nuclear energy professionals, and sharing technical information and best practices. KHNP Acting President Jeon Dae-wook stated, "KHNP has responded to the global energy transition based on its experience in nuclear power plant operation and technological expertise. We will actively cooperate with EMA as a responsible partner in its review of the safety and feasibility of SMR technology, ensuring meaningful results."
