이번 캠페인은 앞서 한국에너지공단이 추진한 ‘승용차 5부제 참여하기’에 이어 두 번째 실천 과제로 ‘대중교통 이용하기’를 제시했다.
한수원에 따르면 대중교통 이용은 국가 에너지 소비를 줄일 수 있는 즉각적이고 효과적인 방법 중 하나다. 국제에너지기구(IEA)는 자가용 대신 버스나 철도 등 대중교통을 이용할 경우 국가 전체 승용차 연료 소비량의 1~3%를 절감할 수 있다고 분석했다.
이를 국내 승용차 2,000만 대의 하루 석유류 소비량 36만1,000배럴에 적용하면 하루 3,610~1만830배럴의 연료 절감 효과가 가능하다. 한 달 기준으로는 10만8,000~32만5,000배럴에 달하며, 이는 최대 약 86만 대의 중형차(연료통 60리터 기준)에 주유할 수 있는 규모다.
한수원 관계자는 “우리나라는 국가적 위기 때마다 국민들의 지혜와 실천으로 어려움을 극복해 온 저력이 있다”며 “대중교통 이용하기 등 에너지절약 국민행동에 적극 동참하고, 더 많은 국민이 함께할 수 있도록 다양한 캠페인과 홍보 활동을 펼쳐 나가겠다”고 말했다.
실제 시민들의 참여 사례도 소개됐다. 울산에서 경주로 출퇴근하는 직장인 양모(44) 씨는 최근 자가용 대신 대중교통 이용을 시작했다. 기존에는 편도 30km를 차량으로 약 50분간 이동했지만, 현재는 버스와 통근버스를 이용해 출퇴근하고 있다.
양 씨는 “처음에는 다소 불편했지만 일주일 정도 지나니 걷는 양이 늘어 몸이 가벼워졌고, 교통비도 하루 1만5,000원에서 8,000원대로 줄었다”며 “운전 대신 책을 읽거나 영화를 볼 수 있고 가족과 대화도 많아졌다. 국가적 에너지 절약 실천에 동참하고 있다는 점에서 보람도 크다”고 전했다.

Amid growing importance for national energy conservation practices due to the ongoing resource security crisis stemming from the prolonged Middle East war, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Kim Hoe-cheon, hereinafter KHNP) has launched a promotional campaign for the ‘Today’s Energy Saving National Action’ in collaboration with the government and energy-related agencies.
Following the ‘Participation in the Five-Day Car Restriction System’ previously promoted by the Korea Energy Agency, this campaign presents ‘using public transportation’ as the second action item.
According to KHNP, using public transportation is one of the immediate and effective ways to reduce national energy consumption. The International Energy Agency (IEA) analyzed that using public transportation, such as buses or trains, instead of private cars can save 1–3% of the nation’s total passenger car fuel consumption.
Applying this to the daily petroleum consumption of 361,000 barrels for 20 million domestic passenger cars, it is possible to save 3,610 to 10,830 barrels of fuel per day. On a monthly basis, this amounts to 108,000 to 325,000 barrels, which is enough to refuel up to approximately 860,000 medium-sized cars (based on a 60-liter fuel tank).
A KEPCO official stated, "Our country has the strength to overcome difficulties through the wisdom and actions of the people whenever there has been a national crisis," adding, "We will actively participate in public energy-saving actions, such as using public transportation, and carry out various campaigns and promotional activities to encourage more citizens to join in."
Actual examples of citizen participation were also introduced. Mr. Yang (44), an office worker commuting from Ulsan to Gyeongju, recently started using public transportation instead of his private car. Previously, it took about 50 minutes to travel 30km one way by car, but now he commutes using buses and commuter buses.
Mr. Yang said, “It was somewhat inconvenient at first, but after about a week, I walked more and felt lighter, and my transportation costs dropped from 15,000 won a day to the 8,000 won range.” He added, “Instead of driving, I can read books or watch movies, and I have more conversations with my family. I also feel a great sense of accomplishment in participating in the national effort to save energy.”
