한국수력원자력(사장 김회천, 이하 한수원)은 6일 대전 중앙연구원에서 캐나다 에너지부 및 주요 전력 운영사들과 ‘디지털전환(DX)·인공지능(AI) 기술교류 워크숍’을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이번 워크숍은 한수원의 원전 디지털전환 및 AI 기술을 공유하고, 캐나다와의 협력 네트워크를 강화하기 위해 마련됐다. 행사에는 캐나다 에너지부를 비롯해 캐나다형 중수로(CANDU) 산업기술 협력기관 코넥서스(Conexus), 온타리오파워제너레이션(OPG), 브루스파워, 뉴브런스윅파워 등 주요 전력 운영사 관계자들이 참석했다.

이날 한수원은 ▲한국형 원전 APR1400의 디지털전환 기술 ▲AI 기반 설비 상태 진단 및 운영지원 시스템 ▲디지털트윈 기술 ▲위험구역 안전 작업 로봇 적용 사례 등 발전소 안전성과 운영 효율성을 높이기 위한 첨단 기술을 소개했다.

참석 기관들은 원전 운영의 디지털 혁신과 인공지능 기술 적용 방안에 대해 다양한 의견을 교환하며, 향후 공동연구 및 기술 협력 확대 가능성을 논의했다.

신호철 한수원 중앙연구원장은 “이번 워크숍은 디지털전환과 인공지능을 활용한 미래 원전 운영 혁신 사례를 공유하는 뜻깊은 자리였다”며 “캐나다 전력 운영사들과의 협력 네트워크를 기반으로 공동연구 등 협력을 지속적으로 확대해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

KHNP Strengthens Nuclear Power DX & AI Technology Cooperation with Canada… Seeking Innovation in Future Nuclear Power Operations

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has set out to expand cooperation in nuclear digital transformation (DX) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with Canadian energy sector organizations.

KHNP (President Kim Hoe-cheon) announced that it held a "Digital Transformation (DX) & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology Exchange Workshop" with the Canadian Ministry of Energy and major power operators at the Central Research Institute in Daejeon on the 6th.

This workshop was organized to share KHNP's nuclear digital transformation and AI technologies and to strengthen cooperation networks with Canada. The event was attended by officials from the Canadian Ministry of Energy, Conexus (a CANDU industrial technology cooperation organization), and major power operators including Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Bruce Power, and New Brunswick Power.

On this day, KHNP introduced advanced technologies aimed at enhancing power plant safety and operational efficiency, including digital transformation technology for the Korean-designed APR1400 nuclear reactor, an AI-based facility condition diagnosis and operational support system, digital twin technology, and application cases of safety robots in hazardous areas.

Participating organizations exchanged various opinions on digital innovation in nuclear power plant operations and ways to apply artificial intelligence technology, and discussed the possibility of expanding joint research and technological cooperation in the future.

Shin Ho-cheol, President of KHNP’s Central Research Institute, stated, “This workshop was a meaningful occasion to share examples of innovation in future nuclear power plant operations utilizing digital transformation and artificial intelligence,” adding, “We will continue to expand cooperation, including joint research, based on our collaborative network with Canadian power operators.”
