【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국수력원자력(한수원)이 태국 국영 전력 공기업인 태국 전력청(Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand·EGAT)과 함께 소형모듈원전(SMR) 기술 협력 확대에 나섰다.

한수원은 5일과 6일(현지시간) 태국 방콕에서 EGAT과 공동으로 ‘한수원–EGAT SMR 기술 세미나’를 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이번 세미나는 지난해 6월 양 기관이 체결한 소형모듈원전(SMR) 분야 협력 양해각서를 바탕으로 실질적인 기술 협력 방안을 구체화하기 위해 마련됐다. 행사에는 한수원을 비롯해 태국 에너지부 관계자와 규제기관, 산업계, 학계 전문가 등 양국 관계자 80여 명이 참석해 태국 내 SMR 도입 가능성과 협력 방향에 대해 논의했다.

세미나에서는 한국과 태국의 에너지 정책을 공유하고 혁신형 SMR(i-SMR) 기술 특성과 개발 현황, 안전해석, 공급망 구축 등 다양한 주제에 대한 발표가 진행됐다. 또한 한국전력기술, 한국원자력연구원, 한전원자력연료, 두산에너빌리티 등 국내 원자력 산업 주요 기관이 참여해 원전 설계와 연료, 기자재 등 분야에서 기술 교류를 이어갔다.

시리왓 쳇시(Siriwat Chedsi) EGAT 부총재는 “오랜 기간 축적된 원전 운영 경험과 전문성, 기술적 노하우를 보유한 한수원과의 협력은 EGAT의 전력 전환 정책 추진에 실질적인 도움이 될 것”이라며 “이번 세미나가 SMR 협력 기반을 구축하는 데 중요한 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.

박인식 한수원 수출사업본부장은 “이번 세미나를 통해 태국과의 기술 교류 토대가 한층 강화됐다”며 “앞으로도 EGAT과 긴밀히 협력해 태국의 지속가능한 에너지 전환을 지원하고, 태국을 포함한 아세안(ASEAN) 지역 내 SMR 사업 기회를 확대해 글로벌 에너지 전환에 기여하는 협력 체계를 마련해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Hold SMR Technology Seminar in Bangkok, Strengthening Cooperation in Nuclear Power

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Thailand's state-owned power utility, have joined forces to expand cooperation in small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

KHNP announced that they co-hosted the "KHNP-EGAT SMR Technology Seminar" with EGAT in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 5th and 6th (local time).

This seminar was organized to concretize practical technological cooperation plans based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the small modular reactor (SMR) sector signed between the two organizations in June of last year. Approximately 80 participants, including KHNP, officials from the Thai Ministry of Energy, regulatory agencies, industry, and academia, attended the event to discuss the potential for SMR deployment in Thailand and future directions for cooperation.

The seminar featured presentations on various topics, including sharing energy policies between Korea and Thailand, the characteristics and development status of innovative SMR (i-SMR) technology, safety analysis, and supply chain development. Key domestic nuclear industry organizations, including Korea Electric Power Engineering & Construction (KEPCO E&C), Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), KEPCO Nuclear Fuel (KNF), and Doosan Energy, participated, continuing technical exchanges in areas such as nuclear power plant design, fuel, and equipment.

Siriwat Chedsi, Deputy Governor of EGAT, stated, "Collaboration with KHNP, which possesses extensive nuclear power plant operation experience, expertise, and technological know-how, will be of practical help in advancing EGAT's power transition policy. We anticipate this seminar will serve as a crucial opportunity to establish a foundation for SMR cooperation."

Park In-sik, head of the Export Business Division at Hanwha Solutions, said, “This seminar has further strengthened the foundation for technological exchange with Thailand,” and added, “We will continue to work closely with EGAT to support Thailand’s sustainable energy transition and expand SMR business opportunities in the ASEAN region, including Thailand, to establish a cooperative system that contributes to the global energy transition.”
