15일 포항시에 따르면 중소기업특별지원지역은 경영 위기에 처한 산업단지·공업지역 등 중소기업 밀집 지역의 신속한 경영정상화 지원을 위해 지정하는 지역이다.

이번에 지정된 지역은 2023년 태풍 힌남노 피해로 중소기업특별지원지역으로 지정된 후 이달 25일 지정기간이 만료될 예정이었다.

특히 이 지역의 입주기업의 상당수는 철강산업과 연관돼 있어 글로벌 철강 경기 침체 속에서 심각한 경영악화가 지속되는 어려움을 겪어 왔다.

이에 포항시는 철강산업의 위기 극복을 위해 생산실적, 고용 사정 악화 등 여건을 분석하고 중소벤처기업부 및 경북도와 지속 협의를 했으며, 현장실사, 심의위원회를 거쳐 중소기업특별지원지역 2년 연장을 최종 지정받게 됐다.

지난 12월 중기부 기업환경조사단 현장실사 시 이강덕 포항시장은 직접 포항의 어려운 경제 상황을 심사위원들에게 전해 깊은 공감을 얻은 바 있다.

이번 지정으로 기존 입주기업과 새로 입주할 중소기업은 향후 2년간 직접 생산한 물품으로 제한경쟁입찰과 수의계약을 통해 공공 입찰에 참여할 수 있으며, 중기부 긴급경영안정자금, 연구개발, 컨설팅, 판매 등 다양한 지원을 체계적으로 받을 수 있다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “이번 중소기업 특별지원지역 연장 지정으로 글로벌 철강 위기 속 심각한 경영 위기에 처한 중소기업의 경영 안정에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다”며 “철강 및 이차전지산업의 위기 극복을 위해 범정부 차원의 실질적인 지원책을 지속 발굴해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
