두 대학은 지난 11월 7일 계명대에서 열린 교류 행사에서 공통사업 설명회, 야구 교류전, 학생 역량 강화 프로그램 등을 진행하며 우의를 다졌다.

1998년 시작된 양교 교류는 영호남 지역 갈등이 깊던 시기, 대학이 앞장서 화합을 이끌어낸 대표적 상생 모델로 주목받았다. 더불어 기독교 기반의 계명대와 원불교 기반의 원광대가 종교 간 협력까지 실천했다는 점에서도 의미가 크다.

두 대학은 1998년 5월 학술교류 협정을 체결한 뒤 첫 교류 행사로 야구부 친선경기를 열었다. 이후 의학·철학·행정·인성교육 등 다양한 분야에서 합동 학술세미나를 꾸준히 이어왔으며, 예체능 교류, 교직원 연수, 교환강의, 학습활동 교류 등 폭넓은 협력 관계를 구축해왔다.

올해 교류 행사는 11월 7일 오전 계명대 행소관에서 공통사업 설명회로 시작됐다. 조준호 원광대 교육혁신원장과 정대원 계명대 학생성공센터장은 ‘인공지능 기반 학생기초역량 강화 방안’을 주제로 발표했다. 

이후 참가자들은 청라언덕과 계명대 동산병원의 전신인 제중원을 방문하며 역사·문화 교류의 시간을 가졌다. 이어 계명대 모빌리티 캠퍼스에서는 친선 야구경기가 열렸으며, 신일희 계명대 총장의 시구와 박성태 원광대 총장의 시타로 양교의 우정이 더해졌다.

두 대학은 학생 인재 육성을 위한 프로그램도 함께 운영하고 있다. 지난 10월 31일부터 11월 1일까지 ‘미래지향적 성장역량 개발’을 주제로 한 학생교류프로그램이 진행됐으며, 오는 12월 23~24일에는 ‘대학연계 글로벌 시티즌 프로그램’이라는 주제로 공동 인성교육 프로그램이 운영될 예정이다.

2017년 교류 20주년을 기념해 양교는 캠퍼스에 상징물을 남기기도 했다. 원광대는 자연식물원 이팝나무 거리를 ‘우정의 길’로 명명했으며, 계명대는 성서캠퍼스 체육대학 앞에 백목련 20그루를 식재해 ‘우정의 숲’을 조성했다.

신일희 계명대 총장은 “28년간 이어온 교류는 지역과 종교의 경계를 넘어 진정한 상생의 가치를 실천해온 소중한 성과”라며 “앞으로도 두 대학의 동반 성장을 통해 지역과 국가의 미래를 이끌 인재를 양성하겠다”고 말했다.

박성태 원광대 총장은 “계명대와의 교류는 시대 변화 속에서도 꾸준히 발전해 왔다”며 “지속 가능한 협력 모델을 만들어 가는 것이 양 대학은 물론 한국 고등교육의 미래에도 의미 있는 기여가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

 Keimyung University and Wonkwang University Continue Exchange in the Yeongnam-Honam Region for 28 Years

Keimyung University (President Shin Il-hee) and Wonkwang University (President Park Sung-tae) have established themselves as symbolic examples of exchange between the Yeongnam and Honam regions, continuing their mutual cooperation for 28 years.

The two universities strengthened their friendship at an exchange event held at Keimyung University on November 7th, featuring joint project briefings, a baseball exchange game, and student capacity building programs.

The exchange, which began in 1998, has garnered attention as a representative model of mutual prosperity, where universities took the lead in fostering harmony during a period of deep-seated conflict in the Yeongnam and Honam regions. Furthermore, it is significant that Keimyung University, a Christian university, and Wonkwang University, a Won-Buddhist university, have practiced interreligious cooperation.

The two universities held a friendly baseball match as their first exchange event following the signing of an academic exchange agreement in May 1998. Since then, the two universities have consistently held joint academic seminars in various fields, including medicine, philosophy, administration, and character education. They have also established a wide-ranging cooperative relationship, encompassing arts and sports exchanges, faculty and staff training, exchange lectures, and learning activity exchanges.

This year's exchange event began with a joint project briefing session at Keimyung University's Haengso Hall on the morning of November 7th. Cho Jun-ho, Director of the Wonkwang University Education Innovation Institute, and Jeong Dae-won, Director of the Keimyung University Student Success Center, presented on the topic, "Strengthening Student Basic Competencies Based on AI."

Following this, participants visited Cheongna Hill and Jejungwon, the predecessor of Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital, for a chance to share history and culture. A friendly baseball game was held at Keimyung University's Mobility Campus, where Keimyung University President Shin Il-hee threw the first pitch and Wonkwang University President Park Sung-tae hit the first pitch, further strengthening the bond between the two universities.

The two universities also operate joint programs to foster student talent. From October 31st to November 1st, a student exchange program themed "Developing Future-Oriented Growth Capabilities" was held. A joint character education program titled "University-Linked Global Citizen Program" will be held on December 23rd and 24th.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the exchange in 2017, both universities established symbolic monuments on campus. Wonkwang University named the poplar tree street in its botanical garden the "Friendship Road," and Keimyung University planted 20 white magnolias in front of the College of Physical Education on its Seongseo Campus to create a "Friendship Forest."

Keimyung University President Shin Il-hee stated, "The 28-year exchange is a valuable achievement that transcends regional and religious boundaries and demonstrates the value of true coexistence." He added, "We will continue to cultivate talent who will lead the future of our region and nation through the shared growth of our two universities."

Wonkwang University President Park Sung-tae said, “The exchange with Keimyung University has steadily developed despite the changing times,” and added, “Creating a sustainable cooperation model will be a meaningful contribution not only to both universities but also to the future of Korean higher education.”
