올해로 20주년을 맞은 북극 프론티어 컨퍼런스는 ‘조수의 전환점(Turn of the Tide)’을 주제로, 전 세계 40개국에서 1,200여 명의 정치인, 기업인, 국제기구 및 NGO 관계자들이 참석해 북극의 지속 가능한 발전과 지정학적 현안을 논의하는 북극 분야 최대 규모의 연례 국제회의다.

포항시는 글로벌녹색성장기구(GGGI) 주관 패널 세션에 공식 초청을 받아 참석했다. 이날 세션은 이강덕 포항시장의 영상 축사를 시작으로 군나르 빌헬름센 트롬쇠 시장과 김상협 GGGI 사무총장의 기조 발언이 이어지며 국제적 협력의 중요성을 강조했다.

‘북극에서의 녹색 해운 영향 이해’를 주제로 열린 이번 세션에는 매즈 크비스트 프레데릭센 북극경제이사회(AEC) 사무총장, 신형철 극지연구소장, 김엄지 한국해양수산개발원(KMI) 실장, 주요 북극 항만 관계자 등 전문가들이 참여해 북극권의 지속 가능한 발전과 기후 위기 대응을 위한 국제 협력 방안을 심도 있게 논의했다.

특히 포항시는 김인현 고려대학교 명예교수를 패널로 내세워 AI·에너지·물류가 결합된 북극항로 전진기지로서의 포항 구상을 적극 홍보했다. 메탄올·암모니아 등 차세대 친환경 연료 공급망을 영일만항 물류 인프라와 연계한 무탄소 선박 항로 ‘그린 코리도(Green Corridor)’ 구축 로드맵을 제시해 각국 관계자들의 높은 관심을 끌었다.

아울러 2027년 개관 예정인 포항국제컨벤션센터를 소개하며 글로벌 마이스(MICE) 도시로서의 성장 가능성도 함께 홍보했다. 포항시는 이번 컨퍼런스를 계기로 GGGI와의 파트너십을 더욱 강화하고, 향후 포항에서 개최될 ‘세계글로벌성장포럼(WGGF)’ 등에 북극권 주요 인사들을 초청하기 위한 협력 논의에도 착수했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “북극항로는 포항이 미래 해양 물류 중심지로 도약하기 위해 반드시 선점해야 할 기회의 길”이라며 “이번 컨퍼런스를 통해 확인한 국제적 관심을 바탕으로 글로벌 해양 도시들과의 연대를 강화해 포항을 북극 항해의 전초기지로 육성하겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편 포항시 방문단은 현지 시각 3일부터 북극경제이사회(AEC), 트롬쇠 시청 및 항만청과 잇따라 간담회를 갖고, 북극항로 협력과 국제 교류 확대를 위한 본격적인 일정에 돌입했다.

Pohang City attended the 'Arctic Frontiers 2026', the world's largest international Arctic conference held in Tromsø, Norway, and began building a global network in preparation for the era of commercialization of the Northern Sea Route.

The Arctic Frontiers Conference, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is the largest annual international conference on the Arctic, bringing together approximately 1,200 politicians, businesspeople, international organizations, and NGO representatives from 40 countries to discuss sustainable development and geopolitical issues in the Arctic.

Pohang City was officially invited to participate in a panel session hosted by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The session began with a congratulatory video address by Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok, followed by keynote speeches by Tromsø Mayor Gunnar Wilhelmsen and GGGI Secretary General Kim Sang-hyeop, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation.

The session, themed "Understanding the Impact of Green Shipping in the Arctic," brought together experts including Mads Qvist Frederiksen, Secretary General of the Arctic Economic Council (AEC); Shin Hyung-chul, Director of the Polar Research Institute; Kim Eom-ji, Director of the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI); and representatives from major Arctic ports. The session delved into in-depth discussions on international cooperation for sustainable development in the Arctic and climate change response.

Pohang City, in particular, actively promoted its vision of Pohang as a forward base for the Arctic shipping route, combining AI, energy, and logistics, with Professor Emeritus Kim In-hyun of Korea University as a panelist. The city presented a roadmap for building a "Green Corridor," a carbon-free shipping route that links a supply chain of next-generation eco-friendly fuels like methanol and ammonia with the Yeongilman Bay Port logistics infrastructure, attracting significant interest from stakeholders from various countries.

The Pohang International Convention Center, scheduled to open in 2027, was also introduced, highlighting the city's potential as a global MICE city. Pohang City used this conference as an opportunity to further strengthen its partnership with the GGGI and initiate discussions to invite key figures from the Arctic to future events such as the World Global Growth Forum (WGGF), which will be held in Pohang.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang stated, "The Arctic Sea Route is a avenue of opportunity that Pohang must seize to become a future maritime logistics hub." He added, "Building on the international interest witnessed at this conference, we will strengthen our ties with global maritime cities and develop Pohang into a leading base for Arctic navigation."

Meanwhile, the Pohang City delegation held a series of meetings with the Arctic Economic Council (AEC), Tromsø City Hall, and the Port Authority on the 3rd (local time), beginning their full-scale itinerary to expand cooperation on the Arctic Sea Route and international exchange.
