포항시는 지난 3일(현지시간) 북극권 최대 경제협력기구인 북극경제이사회(AEC)와 노르웨이 트롬쇠시, 트롬쇠 항만청을 잇달아 방문해 간담회를 열고 북극항로 및 녹색경제 분야 협력 방안을 논의했다고 밝혔다.

시는 AEC와의 면담에서 2026년 하반기 개최 예정인 세계녹색성장포럼(WGGF)에 AEC 의장을 기조강연자로 초청하고, 북극 지역의 지속 가능한 개발 경험을 아시아 제조도시인 포항에 접목하는 세션 운영을 제안했다. 이번 논의는 지난해 ‘북극협력주간’을 계기로 체결한 북극항로 및 경제협력 확대를 위한 업무협약(MOU)의 후속 조치로, 양측은 기존 항로 협력을 넘어 녹색성장과 신산업 분야로 협력 범위를 확대하는 데 공감대를 형성했다.

이어 열린 트롬쇠 시청 및 항만청과의 간담회에서는 영일만항을 중심으로 한 북극항로 개척과 해양 물류 협력, 수소 에너지 등 친환경 기술 교류 방안이 중점적으로 논의됐다. 포항시는 트롬쇠 항만청의 친환경 항만 운영 경험과 포항의 수소 연료전지, 스마트 IT 기술을 연계한 기술 교류 모델을 제안했다.

군나르 빌헬름센 트롬쇠 시장은 향후 항만 교류를 포함한 포항시와 트롬쇠 간 북극항로 거점도시 비전 확대를 위한 포괄적 도시 교류에 대해 긍정적인 입장을 밝히고, 구체적인 협력 방안에 대한 후속 논의를 이어가기로 했다.

포항시 관계자는 “이번 방문은 포항이 북극과 아시아를 잇는 녹색경제 파트너로 도약하는 전환점이 됐다”며 “세계녹색성장포럼(WGGF)의 성공적인 개최를 준비하는 한편, 영일만항의 북방 물류 경쟁력을 지속적으로 강화해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

한편 포항시는 앞서 북극권 최대 규모의 국제회의인 ‘2026 북극 프론티어 컨퍼런스(Arctic Frontiers 2026)’에 참석해 영일만항을 거점으로 한 친환경 북극항로 비전을 제시했다. 지난 2일에는 글로벌녹색성장기구(GGGI)가 주관한 세션에 전문가 패널로 참여해 ‘포항의 북극항로 개척 준비 사항과 지속 가능한 녹색 해운 및 영일만항의 미래’를 주제로 발표하며, 영일만항의 지리적 이점과 친환경 항만 인프라 구축 계획, 녹색 해운 전환 전략 등을 소개했다.

A Pohang City official stated, "This visit marks a turning point for Pohang as a green economic partner connecting the Arctic and Asia. We will prepare for the successful hosting of the World Green Growth Forum (WGGF) and continue to strengthen Yeongilman Port's northern logistics competitiveness."

Meanwhile, Pohang City previously presented its vision for an eco-friendly Arctic shipping route centered around Yeongilman Port at the "Arctic Frontiers 2026," the largest international conference in the Arctic Circle.
