이번 조치는 명절 기간 방문객 증가로 인한 주차 부담을 완화하고, 시민과 귀성객이 보다 편안한 분위기 속에서 명절을 보낼 수 있도록 마련됐다.
무료 운영 대상은 포항시가 운영 중인 모든 유료 공영주차장으로, 오는 13일부터 18일까지 총 6일간 적용된다. 시는 이번 조치를 통해 시민과 방문객들이 전통시장과 주요 상권을 보다 쉽게 찾고, 주차 요금 부담 없이 공영주차장을 이용할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
아울러 같은 기간 모범운전자연합회 포항 북부지회는 KTX 포항역을 비롯해 환호공원, 죽도시장 일원 등 주요 혼잡 구간에서 교통지도 봉사활동을 실시한다. 명절 준비와 귀성·관광객 증가에 대비해 연인원 100여 명의 모범운전자가 현장에 투입돼 원활한 교통 흐름 유도와 보행자 안전 확보에 나설 예정이다.
포항시 관계자는 “공영주차장 1시간 무료 운영으로 시민과 귀성객들이 주차 걱정 없이 전통시장과 주요 상권을 편리하게 이용하길 바란다”며 “이번 조치가 명절 기간 지역 상권 활성화와 시민 편의 증진에 도움이 되길 기대한다”고 말했다.
이어 “앞으로도 시민 생활과 밀접한 분야를 중심으로 체감할 수 있는 생활 편의 정책을 지속적으로 추진해 나가겠다”고 덧붙였다.
한편 포항시는 앞서 죽도시장 인근 5개 공영주차장 명칭을 ‘죽도시장 제1~제5 공영주차장’으로 단일화해 이용자 안내 편의성을 높이는 등 전통시장 접근성 강화를 위한 주차 환경 개선을 지속적으로 추진해 오고 있다.
