전미번역상은 미국문학번역가협회(ALTA)가 주관하는 미국의 대표적인 번역 전문 문학상으로 1998년에 제정되어 매년 시와 산문 부문으로 나누어 뛰어난 번역으로 영문학에 탁월한 공헌을 한 번역자에게 수여되는 상이다.

또한, 영어로 번역된 뛰어난 아시아 시 작품의 번역가에서 시상하는 ‘루시엔 스트릭 번역상’도 수상하며, 해외에서 크게 주목을 받고 있다.

한국문학작품이 전미번역상을 수상한 것은 이번이 처음이며, 유명 작품이 아니라 비주류 작품을 번역해 수상까지 하게 된 것은 더욱 이례적인 일이다. 김이듬 시인의 ‘히스테리아’는 국내에서 크게 주목받지 못하던 작품이다. 레빈 교수는 김이듬 시인의 작품 20여 편을 번역해 왔다. 이후 한국문학번역원가 주관한 ‘서울국제작가축제’에서 만난 미국 출판사 대표의 제안으로 번역을 맡게 됐다고 한다.

‘히스테리아’는 페미니즘을 다룬 시다. 레빈 교수는 외국인 남자로서 한국의 정서를 이해하며 여성의 이야기를 번역하는 게 쉬운 일은 아니었다고 한다. 그는 연세대에서 강의할 때 학생으로 만난 서소은, 최혜지 씨와 함께 번역을 해 큰 도움이 됐다고 했다. 한국에서는 크게 주목 받지 못한 작품이었지만 재미있고, 과감한 표현들로 인상 깊은 작품이어서 미국에서 큰 호응을 얻을 수 있을 것이라 확신했다고 했다.

레빈 교수는 번역은 단순히 언어를 직역해 바꾸는 것이 아니라 문화와 정서를 이해하며, 작품의 의미를 그대로 전달하는 또 하나의 중요한 문학 활동이라고 말했다. 그러면서, 서양에서는 한국의 문학 작품들은 진지하고 우울하다는 평이 강한데, 본인은 그렇게 생각하지 않는다고 했다. 오히려 유머러스하고 재미있는 부분들이 많은데, 한국의 정서와 번역하는 언어에서 문화적 차이가 있어 그렇게 평가되는 것 같다. 특히, 시는 함축적이고 은유적인 표현이 많아 더욱 까다로운 작업이다. 한국 시 역시 재미있고 인상적인 작품들이 많아 한국문학을 공부하고 번역하는 일에 보람을 느끼고 있다고 한다.

레빈 교수는 “작품을 번역한다는 것은 최근 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 다양한 세계적인 문화를 이해하고 같이 공유할 수 있는 것은 번역이 큰 역할을 한다.”며, “최근 한국의 문화는 한류라는 이름으로 전 세계에 위상이 높아졌지만, 고전이나 대표적인 문학 작품은 아직 많이 알려지지 않아 안타깝다. 한국의 문학 작품이 한류와 함께 할 수 있도록 번역 활동을 계속 이어 나갈 예정이다.”며 앞으로의 포부를 밝혔다.

제이크 레빈 교수는 2012년 미국에서 석사학위를 마친 뒤 세종대 영어영문학과 교수로 한국에 왔다. 한국어를 전혀 할 줄 몰랐던 상황 속에서 한국어를 배우겠다는 생각으로 교수직을 그만두고 1년간 한국어 연수를 하고 서울대서 박사학위를 수료했다. 이후 연세대에서 강사직을 지내다 2017년에 계명대 문예창작학과 교수로 임용돼 활발한 번역활동을 하고 있으며, 한국문학번역원에서도 강의를 맡고 있다.

Poet Ideum Kim's “Hysteria” is a work that has not received much attention in Korea. Professor Levin has translated more than 20 works by poet Ideum Kim. Later, he was in charge of translation at the “Seoul International Writers Festival” hosted by the Korean Literature Translation Institute at the suggestion of a representative of an American publishing company.

'Hysteria' is a poem that deals with feminism. Professor Levin said that as a foreign man, it was not easy to understand Korean sentiment and translate women's stories. He said that it was of great help by translating with Soeun Seo and Hyeji Choi, whom he met as students when he was teaching at Yonsei University. It was a work that did not receive much attention in Korea, but it was a work that was impressed with interesting and bold expressions, so he said he was sure that it would get a great response in the United States.

Professor Levin said that translation is not simply a literal translation of language, but another important literary activity that understands culture and emotions and conveys the meaning of the work as it is. Meanwhile, in the West, it is said that Korean literature is serious and depressing, but I do not think so. Rather, there are a lot of humorous and interesting parts, but it seems to be appreciated because there are cultural differences in Korean sentiment and the language to be translated. In particular, poetry is a more tricky work because there are many implicit and metaphorical expressions. Korean poetry also has many interesting and impressive works, and it is said that studying and translating Korean literature is rewarding.

Professor Levin said, “Translating works has been highly regarded recently. Translation plays a big role in being able to understand and share a variety of global cultures.” He added, “Recently, Korean culture has increased its status around the world under the name of Hallyu, but many classics and representative literary works are not yet known. Regretful. We plan to continue our translation activities so that Korean literary works can be combined with the Korean Wave.”

Professor Jake Levin came to Korea as a professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Sejong University after completing his master's degree in the United States in 2012. In a situation where I didn't know how to speak Korean at all, I quit my professorship with the thought of learning Korean, and studied Korean for one year, and completed my doctorate at Seoul National University. Later, he served as a lecturer at Yonsei University, and was appointed as a professor in the Department of Creative Writing at Keimyung University in 2017, and is actively conducting translation activities, and is also teaching at the Korean Literature Translation Institute.
