당연히 했어야 할 시도당 차원의 후보 의전도 이뤄지지 않았다. 통상 대통령 후보가 정해지면 시도당은 자동적으로 대선 모드 체제로 접어들고, 후보의 지역 방문시에는 차량에서부터 경호, 일정 전반을 해당 시.도당에서 책임지고 의전한다. 실제, 지난 20대 윤석열 전 대통령이 후보로 선출되었을 당시 당무는 물론 모든 조직이 윤석열 모드로 전환됐고, 자동적으로 시도당 선대위도 즉각 꾸려졌다.

그리고 마침내 5일 저녁에는 6일 예정되어 있는 대구경북지역 방문 계획에도 불구하고 국민의힘은 대통령 후보인 김 후보에 대한 어떤 지원도 하지 않았다. 

김 후보 캠프측은 이날 저녁 당연히 도당에서 책임져야 할 후보 차량 의전 혜택도 받지 못하고 자신들의 힘으로 차량을 섭외해야 했다. 이뿐 아니라 6일 후보의 경북 방문에는 당연 참석해야 할 박형수 도당위원장은 물론, 지역구 국회의원의 모습도 찾아볼 수 없었다. 

단일화를 약속했던 김 후보에 사기를 당했다는 이야기까지 나오고, 이날 저녁에는 후보 교체를 위한 것으로 보이는 당원 ARS 여론조사 실시 공지가 당원들에게 전달됐다. 그리고 무소속 한덕수 후보와 국민의힘 권영세, 권성동 세 사람이 김 후보를 만나기 위해 대구로 내려온다는 소식이 전해지면서 김문수 후보의 일정은 모두 중지됐다. 

김 후보는 이날 저녁 서울로 상경했다. 당 지도부를 만날 수도 있을 것으로 점쳐 졌지만, 만남은 서울에서도 이뤄지지 않은 것으로 전해졌다. 다만, 이날 저녁 김 후보 측에서는 단일화 추진에 대하여는 부인하지 않는 메시지를 내놨다. 문제는 방식이었다. 김 후보측은 “단일화는 추진하되, 여론조사 방식은 아니다”고 못을 박으며 “한덕수 후보를 만나 정중하게 자진 사퇴를 요청하는 방법이 될 것”이라고 전했다. 

한덕수로의 단일화를 추진하려 했던 당내 일부 세력들의 의도와는 완전히 다른 버전을 김 후보는 생각하고 있는 것이 현실로 드러난 셈이다. 이에 앞서 김 후보 측 김재원 전 최고위원도 방송에 나와 “이번 대선에서 한덕수 후보가 국민의힘 후보로 출마하는 일은 없을 것”이라고 못 박은바 있다. 이날 메시지는 이 같은 단일화 방식을 거듭 확인시킨 발언으로, 적어도 친윤 그룹의 고민이 깊어질 것이란 전망이다.

보수 심장이라는 대구경북 민심도 갈렸다. 윤석열 정권의 계엄선포 밑 탄핵에도 불구하고 국민의힘 지지층이 아직도 절대적인 TK민심은 ‘김문수 후보가 경선 당시 약속한 단일화를 우선해서 지켜야 한다‘라는 주장과 ’수 억 원의 비용까지 부담시키고 경선을 시키면서 선출해놓고 당이 너무 압박하고 있다, 이렇게 한덕수에 넙죽 줄 것 같으면 뭣하러 경선을 했느냐, 한덕수도 국민의힘 경선에 참여시켜 그냥 주면 되지‘라며 맞서고 있다. 

일부 당원들은 “대선 치르기도 전에 당이 쪼개지는 것 아니냐”는 우려를 나타내기도 했다. 또다른 당원들 사이에서는 “이럴 바에야 한동훈 후보를 선택하는 게 옳았다”며 김 후보와 당 지도부를 싸잡아 비난했다.
