후보 단일화 실패 공식 선언 후, 전격적으로 후보 교체 수순에 들어간 국민의힘을 취재하기 위해 10일 현장에 도착했을 때, 국힘 당원인 K 모씨(대구 동구 거주)는 “적어도 아직 이틀의 시간이 있었던 만큼 후보 단일화는 진행 중이었던 것으로 봐야 했다”고 강조했다. 그러면서 “단일화에 실패했으니 이 책임을 김문수 후보에 물어 후보를 교체하겠다고 선언한 당 지도부의 결정은 누가 봐도 납득이 가지 않는다”고 덧붙였다.

10일 새벽 기습 처리된 한덕수의 후보 결정은 국민의힘 안방인 TK지역 당원들을 이렇듯 들끓게 만들었다. 꾸준히 접수되던 탈당계는 더욱 증가한 것으로 관측되고 있다. 당원은 아니지만 지역 정서와 맥을 같이해 국민의힘에 마음을 주었던 이들은 “이제 보수우파 마지막 남은 진영은 개혁신당 이준석 밖에 없는 것이냐”며 지지후보 변경을 암시했다.

더불어민주당 이재명 후보가 다녀간 경북 지역의 주민들 사이에서는 “이번엔 도저히 국민의힘  찍지 못하겠다”는 말들이 서슴없이 나오는 모습도 종종 목격됐다.

국민의힘의 5.10 새벽 기습 후보 교체 작전은 윤석열 전 대통령의 지난 12.3 불법계엄선언에 이은 제2의 당내 내란이라는 비난이다. 김문수 후보는 당의 이 같은 후보 교체 전략을 두고 불법이라 명시하고 끝까지 투쟁해 주도한 이들을 반드시 심판 받게 하겠다고 단언했다. 김 후보 뿐 아니라 당내 고문과 경선에 참여했던 후보들도 당의 방침을 두고 “비민주적이”이라며 쌍권에 대하여 정치적 책임, 즉 사퇴를 촉구하고 나섰다.

그는 이어 “새벽 기습 작전을 방불케 하는 대통령 후보 강제 교체. 그 과정에서 우리당의 민주, 공정, 정의는 모두 사라졌으며 대한민국 민주주의 역사상 유례없는 파괴적 행위가 벌어졌다”고 재차 강조하면서 당 지도부의 만행을 “윤석열 전 대통령의 비상계엄과 다를 바 없다“고 비유했다.
