하지만 조 대표는 이 같은 구상이 비현실적이며 국가재정에 막대한 부담을 줄 수 있다고 경고했다. 그는 “기본사회는 결국 국가가 국민에게 모든 것을 공급하는 시스템으로, 미래세대에게 막대한 부채를 떠넘기게 될 것”이라며 “복지 수요가 급증하는 상황에서 국가 재정은 이미 한계에 다다랐다”고 주장했다.
또 “보편적 복지는 선별적 복지보다 효율이 낮고, 대규모 예산 투입에 비해 효과도 크지 않다”며 “이재명 후보가 말하는 기본사회 실현에는 연간 100조원 이상이 필요하며, 재정적자가 200조원에 이를 수 있다”고 지적했다.
조 대표는 “기본사회는 결국 국민을 국가의 배급에 의존하게 만들고, 생산성 하락으로 이어질 수밖에 없다”며 “평범한 국민들은 이러한 사회주의적 발상에 동의하지 않을 것”이라고 말했다. 이어 “우리 국민은 대선에서 늘 합리적인 선택을 해왔다. 이번에도 현명하게 판단할 것이라 믿는다”고 덧붙였다.
