【브레이크뉴스 영주】이성현 기자=경북 영주시는 유네스코 세계유산인 부석사의 국보와 보물급 문화유산을 안전하게 보존하기 위해 부석사박물관 리모델링 공사를 18일 시작했다고 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 2027년까지 3년에 걸쳐 진행되며, 총 56억 8,500만 원의 사업비가 투입된다. 재원은 국비 17억 500만 원, 도비 19억 9,000만 원, 시비 19억 9,000만 원으로 마련됐다. 연면적 1,651㎡ 규모의 박물관은 리모델링을 통해 문화재 보존과 관리에 최적화된 공간으로 재탄생하게 된다.
영주시는 2023년 4월 기본계획을 수립한 뒤 2024년 3월 설계에 착수했으며, 올해 6월 국가유산청으로부터 최종 설계 승인을 받고 본격적인 공사에 돌입했다.
리모델링의 핵심은 국보 ‘부석사 조사당 벽화’의 귀환을 대비한 보존·전시 공간 조성이다. 고려 우왕 3년(1377년)에 제작된 이 벽화는 국내에서 가장 오래된 사찰 벽화로, 1916년 일제강점기 당시 조사당 벽에서 분리돼 석고 보강 처리 후 보관돼 왔다. 2020년 국립문화유산연구원으로 옮겨진 뒤 현재까지 정밀 진단과 전면 보존처리가 진행 중이며, 2026년 말 박물관으로 돌아올 예정이다.
이와 함께 고려 목판, 오불회 괘불탱, 북지리 석조여래좌상, 석조석가여래좌상 등 부석사 경내에 흩어져 있는 국가 지정 문화유산도 리모델링 후 박물관으로 옮겨와 산불 등 자연재해로부터 안전하게 보관·전시될 예정이다. 또한 관람객 편의를 위해 뮤지엄샵과 휴게 공간도 신설된다.
부석사는 신라 문무왕 16년(676년) 의상대사가 창건한 한국 화엄종의 근본 도량으로, 2018년 ‘산사, 한국의 산지승원’으로 세계유산에 등재됐다. 시는 이번 리모델링이 세계유산의 가치를 더욱 높이는 계기가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.
부석사 총무 등화 스님은 “이번 리모델링은 단순한 보존 공간 확충을 넘어 사찰 박물관의 기능을 재정의하는 문화재생 사업”이라며 “세계유산을 품은 영주의 브랜드를 강화하는 전환점이 될 것”이라고 말했다.
영주시 관계자는 “리모델링 사업이 차질 없이 진행될 수 있도록 아낌없이 지원해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Buseoksa Temple, founded by Great Monk Uisang in 676 (the 16th year of King Munmu's reign) during the reign of King Munmu of Silla, is the foundational temple of the Korean Hwaeomjong sect. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2018 as a "Sansa, a Mountain Monastery in Korea." The city expects this remodeling to further enhance the value of the World Heritage site.
Venerable Deunghwa, the chief administrator of Buseoksa Temple, stated, "This remodeling is a cultural revitalization project that goes beyond simply expanding the preservation space and redefines the function of a temple museum. It will be a turning point in strengthening Yeongju's brand as a World Heritage site."
A Yeongju city official stated, "We will provide unwavering support to ensure the smooth progress of the remodeling project."
