【브레이크뉴스 의성】진예솔 기자=27일 오전 9시 의성종합운동장 스타트라인에 선 참가자들의 표정은 설렘과 긴장감으로 가득했다. 제1회 의성 마늘 마라톤 대회가 드디어 그 첫 포문을 열었다.

첫 대회임에도 불구하고 5km와 10km 코스에 1500여 명이 참가한 이날, 운동장은 다양한 연령대 참가자들로 북적였다. 지역 주민뿐 아니라 전국 각지에서 달리미들이 모여든 현장에서, 특히 눈에 띈 것은 세대를 초월한 참가자들의 다양한 모습이었다.

창원 성산구에서 온 김다솔 참가자는 2021년생으로 직접 발로 뛴 가장 어린 참가자였다. 아버지와 손을 꼭 잡고 5km 코스에 도전한 다솔이는 출발 전부터 연신 주위를 둘러보며 신기해했다.

다솔이의 아버지 김동관 참가자는 "평소 날씨 좋을 때 한 번씩 아이와 함께 뛰곤 했는데, 이번에는 쉬는 날을 맞아 드라이브 겸 아이와 함께 참가했다"며 참가 계기를 설명했다.

"목표는 끝까지 포기하지 않고 완주하는 것"이라고 말한 김 씨는 "도심 대회와 달리 시골이라 공기도 맑고 분위기가 한적해 좋았다. 시간이 되면 또 참가하고 싶다"고 소감을 전했다.

실제로 대회장 주변으로는 가을 햇살 아래 황금빛으로 물든 들판과 마늘밭이 펼쳐져, 도심 마라톤에서는 느낄 수 없는 여유로운 풍경을 선사했다.

2020년생 서영윤 참가자는 엄마와 2017년생, 2018년생 누나, 형과 함께 참가해 화제가 됐다. 영윤이에게는 이번이 두 번째 마라톤 참가다.

"이전에 단양의 별빛 마라톤에 참여했어요"라고 밝힌 영윤이의 어머니 박혜정 참가자는 이번 대회의 특별함을 강조했다.

"보통 다른 지역에서 하면 아침에 새벽에 일찍 일어나서 가거나 전날에 준비를 해서 가야 하는데, 의성에서 하니까 바로 올 수 있어서 너무 좋더라고요"

박 씨는 평소에도 달리기를 즐기는 편이라고 했다. "이곳 공설운동장에서 아이들과 같이 수요일마다 세 바퀴, 네 바퀴 뛰고 가는 편이에요"

오늘 목표를 묻는 질문에 그는 "아이들과 함께 걷지 않고 무조건 뛰어서 5km를 다 달성하는 게 목표입니다"라고 의지를 다졌다.

대회장 분위기를 더욱 의미있게 만든 주인공은 1949년생 칠곡군 왜관읍에서 온 김기준 참가자였다. 

"의성 김씨"라며 자신을 소개한 김기준 씨는 "고향에서 열리는 첫 대회라 다른 마라톤 일정을 다 취소하고 왔다"며 고향에 대한 각별한 애정을 드러냈다.

김기준 씨는 전국은 물론 해외 유명 마라톤에도 참가한 베테랑 러너다. "10여 년 전 춘천 마라톤에도 나갔고, 20년 전에는 미국 보스턴 마라톤에도 다녀왔다"고 자신의 이력을 소개했다.

그는 "오늘 대회는 의성 마늘 마라톤 첫 회라서 의미가 크다. 고향에서 이렇게 대회가 열리니 감회가 새롭다"며 감격스러워했다.

특히 "앞으로도 계속 참가할 수 있도록 이번 대회를 계기로 의성에서도 마라톤 대회가 활성화되길 바란다"고 힘주어 말하며, 대회의 지속적 발전에 대한 기대감을 표현했다.

1951년생 송유흡 참가자는 의성 지역 출신으로 이번 대회에 특별한 의미를 부여했다.

나이가 무색하게 느껴지는 건강 비결을 묻자 "건강을 위해 달리기를 시작한 지 20년째"라고 답했다.

평소 다른 마라톤에도 자주 참석하는 그는 "의성이 고향인데 올해가 처음이잖아요. 다른 지역은 다 하는데 의성만 마라톤 경기가 없어 섭섭하기도 하고 그랬습니다. 이제는 의성에서도 달릴 기회가 생겨 기분이 좋습니다"라며 감회를 드러냈다.

송 씨는 "건강을 위해서 하루에 10km씩 계속 뛰는데, 앞으로도 꾸준히 뛸 수 있으면 좋겠습니다"라며 기대감을 나타냈다.

치유와 회복의 메시지가 담긴 특별한 대회

이번 대회는 단순한 스포츠 이벤트가 아니다. 지난 봄 발생한 대형 산불로 피해를 입은 지역의 회복과 주민 사기 진작을 목적으로 한 "치유형 스포츠 행사"로 기획된 점이 특별하다.

제8회 의성슈퍼푸드마늘축제(9월 26일~28일)와 연계되어 열린 이번 마라톤은 의성의 대표 특산품인 마늘을 널리 알리고 지역민 화합을 도모하는 자리로 마련됐다.

참가자 전원에게는 완주메달과 함께 의성 특산품인 마늘이 선물로 제공됐으며, 10km 코스와 5km 코스 5-1위에게는 상금이 수여됐다.

오전 9시 10km 코스를 시작으로 이어진 5km 코스까지, 약 2시간 동안 진행된 대회는 큰 사고 없이 마무리됐다. 

의성읍 남대천 구봉공원 일대에서 열리고 있는 마늘축제와 연계되어, 참가자들과 가족들은 마라톤 완주 후 축제장에서 다양한 체험 프로그램과 먹거리를 즐기며 하루를 보냈다.

4세 꼬마부터 74세 어르신까지, 천여 명이 함께 만들어낸 화합의 현장에서 '마늘 향기 나는 건강한 축제'라는 슬로건이 단순한 구호가 아님을 증명했다. 세대를 아우르는 의성 마늘 마라톤의 성공적인 첫걸음에서 대회의 밝은 미래를 엿볼 수 있었다.
