【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포스코그룹 장인화 회장이 지난 12일(현지시간) 미국 워싱턴 D.C.에서 열린 세계철강협회(World Steel Association, worldsteel) 총회에 참석해 글로벌 철강업계 리더들과 주요 현안을 논의하고, 안전 혁신 문화 정착의 중요성을 강조했다.

이번 총회에는 포스코그룹을 비롯해 타타스틸, 일본제철 등 세계 주요 철강기업 CEO들이 대거 참석했다.

한국 철강업계를 대표해 세계철강협회 집행위원회 회의에 참석한 장 회장은 주요 철강사 대표들과 함께 ▲세계철강협회 안전보건방침 ▲기후대응 전략 및 탈탄소 전환 ▲탄소 배출량 할당 국제 표준화 ▲차세대 철강 차체 솔루션 개발 등 주요 의제를 공유하며 향후 협회의 발전 방향을 논의했다.

장 회장은 이 자리에서 “안전한 일터를 만들기 위해서는 잠재 위험을 근본적으로 제거하고, 협력사를 포함한 모든 현장 구성원이 재해 예방의 주체가 되어야 한다”며 “AI 기술을 접목한 스마트 안전체계 구축을 통해 ‘K-Safety’의 글로벌 모범사례를 만들어 나가겠다”고 말했다.

한편 포스코는 총회 다음 날인 13일 열린 세계철강협회 회원사 회의에서 ‘안전보건 우수사례 공모전’ 우수기업으로 선정됐다. 세계철강협회는 매년 회원사의 안전 혁신 활동을 평가해 시상하고 있으며, 포스코는 ‘고로 풍구 영상 기반 AI 스마트 기술’로 공정안전 부문 최고상을 수상했다.

이 기술은 고로(용광로) 내부의 용융물과 접촉하는 설비인 ‘풍구’에 영상 AI 및 데이터 처리 기술을 적용해 설비 이상을 자동 판별하고, 이상 징후 발생 시 즉시 작업자에게 알림을 제공하는 시스템이다. 이로써 설비 파손 위험을 사전에 방지하고 현장 안전을 강화한 점이 높이 평가됐다.

장 회장은 총회 기간 동안 호주, 유럽, 일본 등 주요 지역의 글로벌 철강사 CEO들과 잇달아 회동하며, 한국 철강산업의 경쟁력 제고와 글로벌 비즈니스 협력 방안을 논의하는 등 적극적인 글로벌 경영활동을 이어갔다.

POSCO Group Chairman In-Hwa Chang attended the World Steel Association (worldsteel) General Assembly held in Washington, D.C. on the 12th (local time). He discussed key issues with global steel industry leaders and emphasized the importance of establishing a culture of safety innovation.

The assembly was attended by CEOs from major global steel companies, including POSCO Group, Tata Steel, and Nippon Steel.

Representing the Korean steel industry, Chairman Chang attended the World Steel Association Executive Committee meeting and discussed key agenda items with representatives from major steel companies, including the World Steel Association's safety and health policy, climate response strategies and decarbonization transition, international standardization of carbon emissions allocation, and development of next-generation steel body solutions. They also discussed the future direction of the association.

At the event, Chairman Jang stated, "To create a safe workplace, we must fundamentally eliminate potential risks, and all on-site employees, including our partners, must take the lead in accident prevention." He added, "We will establish a global best practice for 'K-Safety' by establishing a smart safety system incorporating AI technology."

Meanwhile, POSCO was selected as an outstanding company in the "Safety and Health Best Practices Contest" at the World Steel Association's member companies meeting held on the 13th, the day after the general meeting. The World Steel Association annually evaluates and awards its member companies for their safety innovations, and POSCO won the top award in the process safety category for its "Blast Furnace Tuyere Video-Based AI Smart Technology."

This technology applies image AI and data processing technology to the "tuyere," a piece of equipment that comes into contact with the molten metal inside a blast furnace, to automatically identify equipment abnormalities and immediately notify workers when an abnormality occurs. This system was highly praised for preventing equipment damage in advance and enhancing on-site safety.

During the general meeting, Chairman Jang continued his active global management activities by meeting with CEOs of global steel companies in major regions such as Australia, Europe, and Japan, and discussing ways to enhance the competitiveness of the Korean steel industry and cooperate in global business.
