【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=호주 앤서니 앨버니지(Anthony Albanese) 총리가 30일 한국과 호주의 대표적 경제협력 상징인 포스코 포항제철소를 방문했다. 호주 총리의 포스코 방문은 2003년 존 하워드(John Howard) 전 총리 이후 22년 만이다.

이번 방문은 양국이 자원, 소재, 수소·에너지 등 미래 산업 분야에서 전략적 파트너십을 한층 강화하는 계기가 됐다.

앨버니지 총리는 포항제철소 원료부두를 둘러보며 호주산 철광석과 원료탄이 실제 제철 공정에 활용되는 과정을 확인하고, 포스코의 한국형 수소환원제철 기술 ‘하이렉스(HyREX)’ 개발 현황에 대한 설명을 들었다.

포스코그룹은 1971년 호주산 철광석 구매를 시작으로 지금까지 약 15억 톤 이상의 호주산 철광석과 원료탄을 사용해 왔다. 이는 한·호 양국의 자원 및 철강 산업 협력의 대표적 성공 사례로 꼽힌다.

앨버니지 총리는 “호주는 핵심 광물과 자원을 풍부하게 보유한 나라로, 세계 경제를 움직이는 원동력”이라며 “한국과의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 지속가능한 성장을 함께 이뤄 나가겠다”고 말했다.

장인화 포스코그룹 회장은 “호주는 철강을 넘어 2차전지 소재, 에너지 분야까지 미래 성장산업을 함께 개척해 나가는 전략적 동반자”라며 “이번 방문이 양국 간 신뢰를 더욱 공고히 하는 계기가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

포스코는 2010년 호주 로이힐 철광석 광산 지분 투자를 시작으로, 현재 탄소저감형 철강 원료(HBI) 생산 프로젝트를 추진 중이다. 또 2022년에는 세넥스에너지(Senex Energy)를 인수하며 천연가스 사업 영역을 확대했다.

한편 포스코그룹은 이날 총리 면담에 앞서 호주의 글로벌 원료기업 BHP와 ‘하이렉스(HyREX)’ 기술 연구개발 협력을 위한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다. 이번 협약에 따라 BHP는 하이렉스 데모 플랜트 시험 가동에 필요한 철광석 원료와 기술 노하우를 제공한다.

포스코는 이번 협력이 글로벌 철강사와 원료공급사가 함께하는 기후변화 대응형 제철 기술 모델로 발전할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

같은 날 오전, 장인화 회장은 경주 예술의전당에서 열린 APEC CEO 서밋(CEO Summit)에 참석해 ‘미래를 잇다: 공동번영을 위한 포스코의 공급망 파트너십’을 주제로 기조연설을 진행했다. 장 회장은 안정적이고 회복력 있는 글로벌 공급망 구축의 중요성을 강조하며, 원료 공급망 강화와 탄소저감 기술, 미래 에너지 전환 등 포스코와 호주의 협력 사례를 공유했다.

이어 열린 패널토론에서는 게리 코르테(Garry Korte) 핸콕 CEO, 오모토 마사유키(Omoto Masayuki) 마루베니 CEO 등과 함께 글로벌 공급망의 지속가능한 해법을 논의했다.

앞서 포스코그룹은 29일 주요 글로벌 파트너사와 함께 ‘포스코 나이트(POSCO NIGHT)’ 행사를 열어 리오틴토 그룹의 사이먼 트롯(Simon Trott) CEO, CATL ESS 부문 주웨이(Zhu Wei) 총괄사장 등과 교류하며 사업 협력 확대 방안을 논의했다.

Australian Prime Minister Albanese Visits POSCO's Pohang Steel Mill

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited POSCO's Pohang Steel Mill on the 30th, a symbol of economic cooperation between Korea and Australia. This marks the first visit by an Australian Prime Minister to POSCO in 22 years, since former Prime Minister John Howard in 2003.

The POSCO Group began purchasing Australian iron ore in 1971 and has since used over 1.5 billion tons of Australian iron ore and coking coal. This is considered a prime example of successful cooperation between Korea and Australia in the resource and steel industries.

Prime Minister Albanese stated, "Australia is a country rich in core minerals and resources, a driving force behind the global economy. We will achieve sustainable growth together through close cooperation with Korea."

POSCO Group Chairman In-hwa Chang stated, "Australia is a strategic partner with which we can explore future growth industries beyond steel, including secondary battery materials and energy. This visit will serve as an opportunity to further solidify trust between our two countries."

POSCO began investing in the Roy Hill iron ore mine in Australia in 2010 and is currently pursuing a project to produce low-carbon feedstock (HBI). Furthermore, it expanded its natural gas business with the acquisition of Senex Energy in 2022.

Meanwhile, prior to the Prime Minister's meeting, POSCO Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with BHP, an Australian global raw materials company, to collaborate on research and development of HyREX technology. Under this agreement, BHP will provide iron ore raw materials and technical expertise necessary for the test operation of the HyREX demonstration plant.

POSCO anticipates that this collaboration will develop into a climate-responsive steelmaking technology model, where global steelmakers and raw materials suppliers collaborate.

That same morning, Chairman In-hwa Chang attended the APEC CEO Summit held at the Gyeongju Arts Center and delivered a keynote address titled "Connecting the Future: POSCO's Supply Chain Partnership for Shared Prosperity." Chairman Chang emphasized the importance of building a stable and resilient global supply chain and shared examples of POSCO's collaboration with Australia, including strengthening raw material supply chains, carbon reduction technologies, and future energy transitions.

In the panel discussion that followed, Hancock CEO Garry Korte and Marubeni CEO Masayuki Omoto discussed sustainable solutions for the global supply chain.

POSCO Group previously held the "POSCO NIGHT" event with key global partners on the 29th. Participants included Rio Tinto Group CEO Simon Trott and CATL ESS Division President Zhu Wei, who discussed ways to expand business cooperation.
