고로 송풍 지관은 고온의 열풍을 용광로 내부로 공급하는 핵심 설비다. 대표 장비인 ‘블로우 파이프(Blow Pipe)’는 1톤이 넘는 대형 자재로 보관이 어렵고, 접합 부위에 손상이 발생할 경우 재사용이 불가능해 대부분 폐기해 왔다.

이 같은 문제를 해결하기 위해 김수학 명장을 중심으로 한 포항제철소 제선부 직원들은 대형 파이프를 안정적으로 이동시키는 운반 장치와 맞춤형 적재 선반을 자체 제작했다. 또한 손상 부위를 동일 소재로 정밀 용접해 복원하는 기술을 확보하고, 보관·운송·수리 과정에서 접합면이 손상되지 않도록 우레탄 커버도 개발했다.

포항제철소는 이번 재활용 기술 도입으로 비상 상황에서도 핵심 자재를 안정적으로 확보할 수 있는 기반이 마련될 것으로 기대하고 있다. 현재 관련 개선 사례에 대한 표준화 작업이 진행 중이며, 향후 전체 공장으로 확대 적용할 계획이다.

제선부 김수학 명장은 “야적장에 방치돼 폐기되던 송풍 지관을 보며 재활용 기술 개발 필요성을 절감했다”며 “올해 초부터 연구를 시작해 상반기 중 재생 공정을 완성할 수 있었다. 이번 기술은 자재 수급이 어려운 상황 속에서 원가 절감에 크게 기여할 것”이라고 말했다.

한편 포스코는 조업 안정성과 원가 절감을 위해 전사적 혁신 활동을 강화하고 있으며, 현장 주도의 개선 문화를 확산하기 위해 ‘에너지 절감 IDEA 공모전’ 등 다양한 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.

Blast furnace blower pipes are a key piece of equipment that supplies high-temperature hot air into the blast furnace. Their key piece, the blow pipe, weighs over a ton, making storage difficult. Damage to the joints makes them unusable, leading to their disposal.

To address these issues, Pohang Works' steelmaking department, led by Master Craftsman Kim Su-hak, developed a transport device and customized loading shelves to ensure the stable movement of large pipes. They also developed a technology to precisely weld damaged areas with the same material and developed a urethane cover to protect the joints from damage during storage, transportation, and repair.

Pohang Works expects that the introduction of this recycling technology will establish a foundation for securing a stable supply of key materials even in emergency situations. Standardization efforts are currently underway for related improvement cases, with plans to expand the technology to the entire plant in the future.

Kim Su-hak, a master craftsman in the steelmaking department, stated, "I realized the need for recycling technology after observing the discarded blower pipes left in open storage yards. We began researching this early this year and were able to complete the recycling process within the first half of the year. This technology will significantly contribute to cost reduction amidst material supply constraints."

Meanwhile, POSCO is strengthening company-wide innovation efforts to ensure operational stability and cost reduction. To foster a culture of field-driven improvement, the company is operating various programs, including the "Energy Savings IDEA Contest."
