이번 행사는 조선시대 성리학의 대가인 이황이 1569년(선조 2년) 음력 3월, 선조와 조정의 만류에도 불구하고 고향 안동으로 낙향했던 역사적 여정을 되짚는 프로그램이다. 이듬해 타계하면서 해당 길은 ‘마지막 귀향길’로 기록됐다.

재현행사는 서울 경복궁에서 경북 안동 도산서원까지 이어지는 옛길을 따라 걸으며 퇴계의 삶과 철학을 체험하는 인문·문화 행사로, 매년 꾸준히 이어지고 있다.

올해는 참가 규모가 전년 대비 약 3배로 확대되며 높은 관심을 반영했다. ‘퇴계의 길 미래를 열다’를 주제로 온고지신(溫故知新)의 의미를 강조하며, 전통 속 지혜를 바탕으로 미래로 나아가는 메시지를 담았다.

개막식에는 황명석 경상북도지사 권한대행, 권기창 안동시장, 김형동 국회의원, 김광림 새마을운동중앙회 회장, 김병일 도산서원 원장, 이치억 종손 등 주요 인사와 재현단, 언론 관계자 등 300여 명이 참석했다. 행사에서는 안동MBC 어린이합창단의 ‘도산십이곡’ 합창과 창작극 ‘물러남의 길을 열다’ 공연이 진행되며 퇴계의 정신을 기리는 시간이 마련됐다.

재현단은 경복궁을 출발해 경기 남양주·양평·여주, 강원 원주, 충북 충주·제천·단양을 거쳐 죽령을 넘어 경북 영주를 지나 4월 12일 도산서원에 도착할 예정이다.

특히 여정 12일차인 4월 10일에는 영주 풍기관아와 이산서원 일대를 지나며, 인근의 금성대군 신단과 피끝마을 등 역사 현장을 통해 충절과 비극의 의미를 되새기는 특별 프로그램이 운영된다.

참가자들은 14일간 봉은사, 남양주 다산 유적지, 여주 기천서원, 안동 노송정 등 주요 인문 자산을 탐방하고, 충주 관아공원, 제천 한벽루, 영주 이산서원 등지에서 강연과 공연을 통해 퇴계의 학문과 사상을 체험하게 된다.

이번 행사는 퇴계를 단순한 유학자를 넘어 지역발전 모델을 제시한 실천적 사상가로 재조명하는 데 의미를 둔다. 그는 ‘강남농법’ 도입과 저수지(복도소) 축조, 치수 기술 보급 등을 통해 농업 생산성을 높이고, 이를 기반으로 서원 중심의 교육과 지역 공동체 발전을 이끌었다.

또한 “선한 사람이 많은 세상을 만들기 위해서는 사람다운 사람을 길러야 한다”는 신념 아래 서원 체계를 정립하며 지방 교육과 문화 생태계 형성에 기여했다는 평가를 받는다.

황명석 권한대행은 “이번 행사는 권력을 내려놓고 지역과 후학을 위해 헌신한 퇴계선생의 삶을 되새기는 뜻깊은 자리”라며 “참가자들이 지역의 가치와 우리 국토의 의미를 재발견하는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

한편 경상북도는 이번 재현행사를 단순한 도보 행사에 그치지 않고, 퇴계가 걸었던 길을 ‘동양의 산티아고’로 브랜드화해 대한민국 대표 인문학 콘텐츠로 육성한다는 계획이다.

The event featured a performance of "Dosan Sibigok" by the Andong MBC Children's Choir and the original play "Opening the Path of Withdrawal," providing an opportunity to honor the spirit of Toegye. The reenactment troupe is scheduled to depart from Gyeongbokgung Palace, pass through Namyangju, Yangpyeong, and Yeoju in Gyeonggi Province; Wonju in Gangwon Province; and Chungju, Jecheon, and Danyang in North Chungcheong Province. After crossing Jukryeong Pass and passing through Yeongju in North Gyeongsang Province, the troupe is set to arrive at Dosan Seowon on April 12.

In particular, on April 10, the 12th day of the journey, the group will pass through the area around Punggwan-a and Isan Seowon in Yeongju. A special program will be held to reflect on the meaning of loyalty and tragedy through nearby historical sites, such as the Shrine of Prince Geumseong and Pikkeut Village.

Over the course of 14 days, participants will explore major cultural assets including Bongeunsa Temple, the Dasan Historic Site in Namyangju, Gicheon Seowon in Yeoju, and Nosongjeong in Andong. Additionally, they will experience the scholarship and philosophy of Toegye through lectures and performances at locations such as Chungju Gwan-a Park, Jecheon Hanbyeokru, and Isan Seowon in Yeongju.

This event is significant in that it re-examines Toegye not merely as a Confucian scholar, but as a practical thinker who presented a model for regional development. He increased agricultural productivity through the introduction of the ‘Gangnam farming method,’ the construction of reservoirs (Bokdoso), and the dissemination of water management techniques. Based on this foundation, he led education centered on Seowons and the development of local communities.

Furthermore, he is credited with contributing to the formation of a local education and cultural ecosystem by establishing the Seowon system under the belief that “to create a world full of good people, we must cultivate people worthy of the name.”

Acting Governor Hwang Myeong-seok stated, “This event is a meaningful occasion to reflect on the life of Teacher Toegye, who relinquished power to dedicate himself to the region and his students,” adding, “I hope this serves as an opportunity for participants to rediscover the value of the region and the significance of our national territory.”

Meanwhile, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province plans to go beyond this reenactment event as a mere walking tour and instead brand the path Toegye walked as the “Santiago of the East,” aiming to develop it into a representative humanities content for South Korea.
