중부권 동서횡단철도는 충남 서산·당진·예산·아산·천안, 충북 청주·증평·괴산, 경북 문경·예천·영주·봉화·울진을 잇는 총 연장 330km 규모의 초광역 철도망이다. 이번 건의는 중부권에 공백으로 남아 있는 동서축 철도 서비스를 확충하고, 광역 교통 접근성을 획기적으로 개선하기 위해 추진됐다.

특히 제5차 국가철도망 구축계획 확정을 앞둔 시점에서 지자체장이 직접 정부를 찾아 초광역 교통망 구축의 필요성을 전달했다는 점에서 의미가 크다.

한편 협력체는 국가철도망 구축계획이 최종 확정될 때까지 지자체 간 공조를 이어가는 동시에 정치권과 중앙정부를 대상으로 한 유치 활동을 지속적으로 전개해 나갈 방침이다.

The cooperative body has submitted a petition with a total of 790,000 residents to the government on two occasions, demonstrating strong community support for the project's necessity.

As a result of these efforts, the entire section was included as a project for additional review in the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan in 2021.
