【브레이크뉴스 의성】이성현 기자=의성군(군수 김주수)은 의성바이오밸리일반산업단지에 입주한 영남대학교 세포배양연구소와 ㈜네오크레마, ㈜티리보스, 중앙대학교 연구진이 공동 수행한 연구 과제가 과학기술정보통신부가 선정하는 ‘2025년 국가연구개발 우수성과 100선’에 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

이번 선정으로 연구진은 과학기술정보통신부 장관 명의의 인증서와 현판을 수여받게 됐으며, 의성군 바이오산업단지를 중심으로 추진해 온 산학연 협력 기반 연구 성과가 국가적으로 우수성을 인정받는 성과를 거뒀다.

선정된 연구 과제는 농림축산식품부의 지원을 받아 수행됐으며, 책임연구자인 최인호 영남대학교 의생명공학과 교수팀은 식품 원료 전문기업 ㈜네오크레마가 발굴한 식품 원료를 활용해 소·돼지·닭 등 배양육 생산에 적용 가능한 신규 세포배양 배지 포뮬러를 개발했다.

이후 배지 전문기업인 ㈜티리보스가 해당 포뮬러를 적용한 액상 배지를 생산하고, 중앙대학교 허선진 교수팀과 협력해 인실리코(In silico) 및 인공지능(AI) 기술을 활용한 천연 배지 첨가제를 개발함으로써 인체 안전성과 가격 경쟁력을 동시에 갖춘 배양육 전용 배지 생산 기술을 확보했다.

의성군은 지난 2023년 영남대학교 세포배양연구소 의성분원에 배지 생산을 위한 GMP 시설을 구축하고, 당시 입주기업이던 ㈜티리보스와 협력해 배지 개발과 산업화를 위한 핵심 기술 발굴을 적극 지원해 왔다. 또한 배지 개발에 필수적인 인실리코·AI 기술 고도화와 관련 기업 유치를 위해 2024년부터 5년간 매년 5억 원 규모의 연구개발비를 세포배양연구소에 지원하고 있다.

㈜티리보스는 의성군이 확보한 약 500평 규모의 GMP 시설에 오는 10월 입주해 세포배양용 배지 생산을 위한 준비를 마쳤으며, 올해부터 본격적인 생산에 돌입할 예정이다.

최인호 영남대학교 교수는 “의성군의 선제적이고 지속적인 지원이 이번 국가연구개발 우수성과 100선 선정의 중요한 밑거름이 됐다”며 “앞으로도 의성군과 참여 기업들과의 긴밀한 협업을 통해 바이오산업단지 활성화와 세포배양 산업의 조기 정착에 기여하겠다”고 말했다.

김주수 의성군수는 “세포배양연구소와 참여 기업에 대한 지속적인 지원을 통해 의성군이 세포배양 관련 산업의 중심지로 성장할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Uiseong County (Governor Kim Ju-soo) announced that a joint research project conducted by researchers from Yeungnam University's Cell Culture Research Institute, Neocrema Co., Ltd., Tiribos Co., Ltd., and Chung-Ang University, all located in the Uiseong Bio Valley General Industrial Complex, has been selected by the Ministry of Science and ICT for the "2025 National R&D Top 100."

With this selection, the researchers received a certificate and plaque from the Minister of Science and ICT. This achievement demonstrates the national recognition of the excellence of research based on industry-academia-research collaboration, centered around the Uiseong County Bio Industrial Complex.

The selected research project was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Professor Choi In-ho's team from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Yeungnam University, the lead researcher, developed a novel cell culture medium formula applicable to the production of cultured meat, including beef, pork, and chicken, using food ingredients discovered by Neocrema Co., Ltd., a food ingredient company.

Subsequently, medium specialist Tiribose Co., Ltd. produced a liquid medium using this formula. In collaboration with Professor Heo Seon-jin's team at Chung-Ang University, the team developed a natural medium additive using in silico and artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This resulted in the development of a medium specifically for cultured meat that is both safe for human health and cost-competitive.

In 2023, Uiseong County established a GMP facility for medium production at the Uiseong Branch of the Yeungnam University Cell Culture Research Institute. Working with Tiribose Co., Ltd., a resident company at the time, the county actively supported the development of key technologies for medium development and industrialization. Furthermore, to advance the in silico and AI technologies essential for media development and attract related companies, the government is providing 500 million won in annual R&D funding to the Cell Culture Research Institute for five years, starting in 2024.

Tiribos Co., Ltd. has completed preparations for cell culture media production by moving into a 500-pyeong (approximately 1,600 square meter) GMP facility secured by Uiseong County in October and plans to commence full-scale production this year.

Professor Choi In-ho of Yeungnam University stated, "Uiseong County's proactive and continuous support has laid a crucial foundation for our selection as one of the top 100 national R&D excellence achievements." He added, "We will continue to work closely with Uiseong County and participating companies to contribute to the revitalization of the bioindustry complex and the early establishment of the cell culture industry."

Uiseong County Mayor Kim Ju-soo stated, "Through continued support for the Cell Culture Research Institute and participating companies, we will do our utmost to help Uiseong County grow into a hub for the cell culture industry."
