이날 착공식은 경남 거제시 둔덕면 일원에서 대통령과 국토교통부 장관, 경상북도지사, 경상남도지사, 지역 국회의원, 경유 지자체장, 지역 주민 등이 참석한 가운데 열렸다.

남부내륙철도는 경상북도 김천시 삼락동에서 경상남도 거제시 사등면까지 총 연장 약 174.6㎞를 연결하는 국가철도망 사업으로, 시속 250㎞급 고속·준고속 철도로 건설된다. 주요 정차역은 김천, 성주, 합천, 진주, 고성, 거제 등이며, 총사업비는 약 7조974억 원이 투입된다. 오는 2031년 개통 시 김천에서 거제까지 이동시간은 기존 2시간 이상에서 약 1시간 내외로 크게 단축될 전망이다.
