포항해양경찰서(서장 이근안)는 1일 살인 및 존속살해 미수 혐의로 피의자 A씨를 구속 송치했다고 밝혔다.

A씨는 지난 3월 22일 밤 경주시 한 항포구에서 심한 지적장애를 가진 조카를 바다에 들어가게 한 뒤 구조하지 않고 방치해 숨지게 한 혐의를 받고 있다. 또한 같은 수법으로 치매를 앓고 있는 모친을 바다에 빠뜨려 살해하려다 미수에 그친 혐의도 받고 있다.

해경 조사에 따르면 A씨는 2018년부터 지적장애가 있는 조카와 치매 모친을 부양해오던 중 경제적·심리적 부담과 신변 비관으로 범행을 계획한 것으로 드러났다. 범행 전 장소와 방법 등을 사전에 준비하는 등 치밀함도 보였다.

범행 당일 A씨는 숙박 중이던 펜션에서 조카와 모친에게 각각 수면제 4~5알을 복용하게 한 뒤 인근 해안가로 이동했다. 이후 자신이 먼저 바다에 들어간 뒤 뒤따라 들어온 조카가 허우적거리는 상황에서도 구조하지 않고 현장을 벗어난 것으로 조사됐다.

이어 부두에 앉아 있던 모친을 바다로 밀어 넣으려 했으나 이를 목격한 시민들에 의해 저지된 것으로 확인됐다.

포항해경은 현장 조사와 주변 CCTV 분석, 휴대전화 디지털포렌식 등을 통해 모친을 상대로 한 추가 범행 정황을 확보하고 존속살해 미수 혐의를 적용했다.

A씨는 조사 과정에서 “함께 극단적인 선택을 하려 했다”는 취지로 진술하며 범행을 시인한 것으로 전해졌다.

경찰은 정확한 범행 경위와 동기를 추가로 조사한 뒤 사건을 검찰에 송치했다.

It is reported that Mr. A admitted to the crime during questioning, stating that he "intended to commit suicide together."

The police forwarded the case to the prosecution after conducting further investigations into the exact circumstances and motives of the crime.
