지난 7일 열린 제60회 백상예술대상에서 연극 ‘맹’으로 ‘젊은 연극상’을 수상한 이철희 연출가는 배우 출신 작가로 극단 코너스톤을 이끌고 있다.

그는 ‘조치원 새가 이르는 곳’, ‘닭쿠우스’, ‘불가불가’, ‘그, 윷놀이’ 등의 작품으로 충청도식 패러디 언어를 현대적으로 풍자화해 이철희식 연극을 무대화해왔다.

제4회 벽산희곡상에서 ‘조치원 해문이’(2014)로 대상을 받은 그는 지난해 ‘그, 윷놀이’로 서울문화재단의 제1회 '서울예술상 연극부문 최우수상을 받았으며 문화체육관광부 '오늘의 젊은 예술가상'을 수상하기도 했다.

연극 ‘맹’은 1940년대 초반 발표한 ‘맹진사댁 경사’(오영진 작)를 이철희 연출가의 특유의 코드로 각색한 작품으로 신분 상승을 위한 맹 진사의 욕망을 패러디와 놀이로 무장해 한국적인 정서로 표현했다. 이 작품은 현시대를 살아가는 인간의 부조리성과 신분 위계와 계급사회의 모순을 우리 정서의 비극성으로 풍자화했다는 평가를 받았다.    

김건표 교수는 “연극 ‘맹’ 이후부터 이철희 연극의 독창적인 무대 언어가 된 것 같다”며 “한국연극 토양에서 충청도식 패러디 연극을 개척해 놀이 정신의 디테일을 살리면서도 웃다, 울다 관객을 흔들어 놓는 것이 충청도식 이철희 연극의 특징”이라고 설명했다. 

이철희 연출가는 “상복이 없는 연출가로 살아왔는데 수상한 것이 비현실적이다”며 “묵묵하게 충청도식 언어로 무대화한 작업이 백상예술대상 수상으로 연극계 주류가 된 것 같아 앞으로는 이철희식 언어로 보답하겠다”고 말했다.

지역대학으로 ‘연극명가’의 위치를 지켜온 대경대 연극영화과는 올해 학과 개설 28년 만에 ‘연기예술과’로 명칭을 전환했다. 연기, 극작·연출 전공으로 세분화해 올해 신입생부터 남양주 캠퍼스 시대로 전환하게 된다. 대경대 연극영화과는 신춘문예 출신의 작가, 배우, 연출가, 축제 감독 등 수 많은 예술가들이 활동하고 있다.
