대구지검 김천지청은 9일 공직선거법 위반 혐의로 불구속 기소 된 국민의힘 경북 구미갑 구자근 국회의원에게 벌금 100만원을 구형했다.

검찰에 따르면 구자근 의원은 지난 4·15 총선 과정에서 구미시예술총연합회 사무국장 출신인 A씨를 찾아가 “선거를 도와주면 보좌관직을 주겠다”고 약속한 혐의로 불구속 기소되었고 9일 벌금 100만원을 구형받았다.

선출직 공직자가 공직선거법 위반으로 징역 또는 100만원 이상의 벌금형이 확정되면 당선이 무효가 되며 오는 26일 구 의원의 선고 공판이 김천 지원에서 열릴 예정이다.

벌금 100만원을 선고받은 구자근 의원이 오는 26일 선고 공판에서 감형 받아 의원직을 유지할 수 있을 것인지 귀추가 주목된다.

이와 관련 구자근 의원실은 “그동안 재판과정을 통해 통상적인 선거운동을 위한 조력요청을 고소인이 합리적인 증거도 없이 왜곡·확대한 허위 주장임이 밝혀졌다”며 “지난 총선에서 투명하고 공정한 선거운동에 힘썼으며 이 과정에 어떠한 불법도 없었던만큼 무죄선고를 확신한다”고 밝혔다.
